After months of tough practice, one of Drake Mock Trial’s teams was able to advance at the regional level by placing second in the Great Plains Regional Tournament. Because of this, Drake Mock Trial will advance to the Opening Round Championship Series in St. Paul, Minn. Success there would lead Drake Mock Trial to the national competition for a second year in a row.

Three advertising students took home awards from the American Advertising Awards dinner on Feb. 20 in Des Moines. Vicki Chai won a gold award, and Paityn Langley and Kelsey Rooney won silver awards. In addition, SJMC alumnus Caleb Bailey won Rookie of the Year honors and Jason Boucher won the Silver Medal award.

Faculty Senate met in regular session on Feb. 17. Senate voted to create the position of immediate past president within Senate, confirmed the 2017–2018 academic calendar, and passed a motion urging University leadership to establish a minimum per-credit hour salary for part-time, adjunct faculty. During the last several months, many areas on campus have been reworking their strategic plans. Instead of operating through habit (we’ve always done it this way, so let’s continue doing so), leaders are examining their areas’ practices and processes through the Balanced Scorecard. The Balanced Scorecard provides an approach for reviewing progress against strategic goals. Join Matthew Mitchell, assistant professor of international business and strategy and Nate Reagen, balanced scorecard consultant as they discuss the steps that Drake has accomplished thus far, and how it positions us for continued strategic success. This two-hour session will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. in Olmsted Rooms 310–311.

Drake Public Safety would like to remind students, faculty, staff, and other members of the campus community that vehicles parked in University lots must be registered and have an official parking decal properly affixed to the inside of the vehicle. Vehicles without a visible, valid decal are considered unregistered and are subject to ticketing and/or towing. You may register up to two vehicles.
Vehicles may only be parked in clearly designated, legal parking spaces. Areas posted with signs restricting parking (handicap, service vehicles, loading zones, fire lanes, etc.) must be observed and complied with. Parking in any travel lane, taking up more than one parking space, blocking another vehicle, or parking on the lawn are all prohibited. Vehicles may not be parked in Commuter lots overnight. Parking regulations are in effect year-round, including breaks in the academic calendar and the summer.

What do you do?
“As the outreach coordinator, I’m part recruiter, part adviser, and part alumni connector for the graduate programs in the College of Business and Public Administration.”
What’s something you’re currently working on?
“Most people feel an affinity with their undergrad but maybe not their graduate school institution if they’re pursuing it part time. So we do semester kickoffs and events to tie them all together across the four grad programs in the CBPA. We do an annual networking event, and we also started the CBPA graduate association—of which I’m the co-adviser—that is made of students and led by students.”
Why do you do what you do?
“When I went to school, it wasn’t a matter of whether I was going to college, it was a question of where. I knew that I wanted to do something with nontraditional aged-students because both my husband and my mom went back as nontraditional students. While they had good jobs and worked hard, once they got their degrees, it was like boom, their career kind of exploded. I thought, ‘I want to be part of that and help those people.’”
“When you see the names of people that are graduating … it’s rewarding to see you can change somebody’s life by just having a conversation with them and telling them what the advantages of our programs are.”
