Staff notes from the Associate Provost (Jan. 25)
First Year Seminar requests are due Feb. 5:
If you would like to offer an FYS in the fall of 2016, please fill out the FYS request form on the FYS Resource website. The course submission form is at the bottom of the page, which also includes other resources you might find useful, including syllabi from previous FYS classes. Note that if you have taught the particular FYS you are proposing since 2012, you will not need to provide any information except for your time preferences. Please submit these applications by Friday, Feb. 5. If you have questions, please contact me (arthur.sanders@drake.edu).
Undergraduate Assistantship Program applications are due in your supervisor’s office by Feb. 5:
Applications for 2016–2017 Undergraduate Assistantship Program (UGA) are due in the office of your supervisor by Friday, Feb. 5. Supervisors will provide their comments and ranking (if more there is more than one application from your particular office) to my office by Monday, Feb. 15. For information about the UGA program, go to the Faculty/Staff Development Grant website. You will find information about the UGA programs, an FAQ about all of the grant programs run through the Provost’s Office, and the forms you need to submit the application. Schools and colleges will begin creating the 2017 on-campus J-Term schedule early in the spring semester. If you do schedule a J-Term class, please also send that information to me at arthur.sanders@drake.edu so that we can post the information on the J-Term website. Also, if you have questions about J-Term classes, please feel free to contact me.

Student travel scholarship available
Iowa Sister States is excited to announce the Jeff Zimpleman Iowa Sister States Scholarship. The scholarship, exclusive to Iowa students, is offered to further student interest in the world of international relations via one of Iowa’s nine Sister State relationships. The Sister States are:
- Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan (established in 1960)
- Yucatán, Mexico (1965)
- Hebei Province, China (1983)
- Terengganu, Malaysia (1987)
- Stavropol Krai, Russia (1988)
- Taiwan (1989)
- Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine (1996)
- Veneto Region, Italy (1997)
- Kosovo (2013)
The scholarship is available for Iowa students enrolled in colleges and universities in the state of Iowa who are seeking a degree in international business or agriculture, international relations, language, or culture (including music, art, and film). Students participating in travel seminars, internships, conferences, or symposia reflecting these majors are also eligible to apply.
Iowa Sister States is proud to partner with the family of Jeff Zimpleman in the creation of this scholarship. Jeff’s love of exploring new places and his understanding of the importance of nurturing international relationships resonates with the very essence of Iowa Sister States’ organizational vision to “be a leader in integrating Iowans with the world community.” Iowan Jeff Zimpleman, a citizen diplomat, did just that. Harkin Institute DC Experience Scholarship
Are you interning in Washington D.C. this summer? Would you like to have your travel and housing accommodations covered? The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement provides housing and transportation to a Drake undergraduate student with financial need who has secured a summer internship in a congressional office, government agency, or nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C.
This scholarship is designed to expose students to policymakers and the policymaking process, much as Sen. Tom Harkin experienced as an intern for Rep. Neal Smith in the summer of 1969, an experience that inspired Sen. Harkin to pursue a career in public service. J-Term 2017 on-campus schedule
It will soon be time to construct the J-Term 2017 on-campus schedule. Each school/college assembles the schedule of their classes, and they will have deadlines sometime very early in the spring semester. If you have questions about J-Term classes (such as how to develop an intensive three-week learning experience, which faculty or staff have successfully organized on-campus J-Term classes and are willing to discuss with others, or what compensation rules are), feel free to contact Associate Provost Art Sanders (arthur.sanders@drake.edu).

It is time to start considering teaching a First Year Seminar in Fall 2016. If you are interested, visit the FYS Resource page, where you will find sample syllabi and other information about the program. And at the bottom of the page you will find the FYS Course Proposal form. (Please note: If you are a full-time faculty member and you are planning on building FYS into your schedule, you still need to fill out this form.) Service-learning match grants
The Ronald and Jane Olson Endowment for Global Service-Learning is providing support for two $500 service-learning match grants for the 2015–2016 academic year. Applications are currently available with a due date of Dec. 17 at 5 p.m. Applicants will be notified by Dec. 22 regarding award status. Apply today!
The Olson Global Service-Learning Match Grant funds are designated to enhance global service-learning projects by providing additional funds that would otherwise not be accessible.
Requirements:
- Funds or in-kind donations of at least $500 must have already been raised.
- Projects must have a strong global service-learning emphasis.
- Student applicants must have demonstrated faculty/staff support.
Please note that we are NOT able to reimburse for individual’s mileage.

Nelson Institute Grant proposals due Dec. 1
The Nelson Institute for Diplomacy and International Affairs invites proposals for a two-year grant commencing Jan. 1, 2016, for interdisciplinary faculty-student research projects addressing a global issue of broad public importance. The submission deadline for proposals is Dec. 1.
The purpose of this initiative is to enhance Drake’s involvement in addressing pressing global issues, thereby helping position Drake University as a global knowledge hub in service to local, national, and international communities.
Through a series of focus groups held in the spring of 2015, Vice Provost for International Programs Christa Olson identified two clusters of global pressing issues that Drake, together with its local and international partners, has the expertise and institutional capacity to address with depth and breadth:
- Food and water security and environmental sustainability
- Global public health and access to quality healthcare
Several other issues were identified in which Drake has depth but not breadth: poverty and access to quality education, bridging cultures, immigration and refugees, and freedom of information and expression.
We especially encourage research proposals that relate to these issue clusters, although proposals on other topics are welcome and no priority will be given based upon topical area.
