Scholarship for non-traditional students available

Executive Women International (EWI) Des Moines Chapter announces that the Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) Scholarship Program is now taking applications.

The ASIST Scholarship is a non-discriminatory, educational scholarship program for the benefit of non-traditional students pursuing an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree. These include persons who are:

  • Past high school age and who are entering a college, university, trade school, and/or the workforce for the first time
  • Non-traditional students already enrolled in a college, university, or trade school program
  • Re-training due to changes in the workplace
  • Otherwise are not the traditional college, university, or trade school student (i.e., has not recently finished high school)

In addition to the Chapter ASIST, there are corporate awards given annually. Corporate candidates are selected from first-place Chapter winners.

Awards are provided for the recipients’ education and related expenses to aid them in obtaining the necessary educational skills to help achieve career goals and objectives. Related expenses include tuition, books, mandatory fees from schools, and child care. Not included are such expenses as rent, utility payments, travel expense, repayment of student loans or remaining balances payable to recipient. Checks for Chapter and Corporate scholarship awards are paid directly to the respective college or university.

Scholarship awards are valid for two years from date granted. Unclaimed awards will be returned to the Chapter or Corporate B/C/DP accounts for redistribution.

Selection criteria may include the following:

  • Financial need
  • Socially, physically, and economically challenged adults
  • Preference is given to those individuals with children residing in the home

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Clearly define career goals and objectives
  • Specify the educational requirements to attain the above goals and objectives
  • Utilize re-entry programs available through colleges/universities/technology centers, community agencies, and service groups or career professionals
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Applicant must reside within boundaries of a participating EWI Chapter—refer to list on ewiconnect.com. EWI of Des Moines boundaries are: Polk, Dallas, Story, & Warren counties.

Ron and Jane Olson Outstanding Global Service-Learning Student Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the Ron and Jane Olson Outstanding Global Service-Learning Student Award. Nominations are due Friday, April 8, at 5 p.m. The selected awardee will receive $500 and will be recognized at the Adams Leadership Convocation April 22 at 12:15 p.m. in Sheslow Auditorium.

A letter of nomination should be submitted speaking to the award criteria.

Ron and Jane Olson established the Outstanding Global Service-Learning Award to recognize outstanding participation in global-service learning initiatives. Criteria for the award include:

  • Engaged in intentional global service-learning opportunities
  • Demonstrated an on-going commitment to global service-learning
  • Exhibited values that encourage global service-learning
  • Supported continuation of global service-learning efforts

The nominee must be a current student at Drake.

Nomination Process

The letter of nomination is due to Global Service-Learning Coordinator Maria Rohach no later than April 8. The letter should be sent as an attachment to maria.rohach@drake.edu. A committee of faculty and staff will review all nominations and make recommendations to the vice provost for international programs.

Global Learning Scholarships now available

Global Learning Scholarships are available for students who are studying abroad, participating in global service-learning, or participating in experiential learning abroad. These scholarships are designed to enable students to reach their full potential as responsible global citizens. Scholarships are open to students studying abroad Summer 2016, Fall 2016, or J-Term 2017. These are need-based scholarships. The application deadline is Tuesday, March 22. Student travel scholarship available

Iowa Sister States is excited to announce the Jeff Zimpleman Iowa Sister States Scholarship. The scholarship, exclusive to Iowa students, is offered to further student interest in the world of international relations via one of Iowa’s nine Sister State relationships. The Sister States are:

  • Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan (established in 1960)
  • Yucatán, Mexico (1965)
  • Hebei Province, China (1983)
  • Terengganu, Malaysia (1987)
  • Stavropol Krai, Russia (1988)
  • Taiwan (1989)
  • Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine (1996)
  • Veneto Region, Italy (1997)
  • Kosovo (2013)

The scholarship is available for Iowa students enrolled in colleges and universities in the state of Iowa who are seeking a degree in international business or agriculture, international relations, language, or culture (including music, art, and film). Students participating in travel seminars, internships, conferences, or symposia reflecting these majors are also eligible to apply.

Iowa Sister States is proud to partner with the family of Jeff Zimpleman in the creation of this scholarship. Jeff’s love of exploring new places and his understanding of the importance of nurturing international relationships resonates with the very essence of Iowa Sister States’ organizational vision to “be a leader in integrating Iowans with the world community.” Iowan Jeff Zimpleman, a citizen diplomat, did just that. With this scholarship we offer you the same opportunity.

Harkin Institute DC Experience Scholarship

Are you interning in Washington D.C. this summer? Would you like to have your travel and housing accommodations covered? The Harkin Institute for Public Policy & Citizen Engagement provides housing and transportation to a Drake undergraduate student with financial need who has secured a summer internship in a congressional office, government agency, or nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C.

This scholarship is designed to expose students to policymakers and the policymaking process, much as Sen. Tom Harkin experienced as an intern for Rep. Neal Smith in the summer of 1969, an experience that inspired Sen. Harkin to pursue a career in public service. Apply for a Goldwater Scholarship

Drake students interested in a career in mathematics, the physical sciences, natural sciences, or engineering are invited to apply to the Barry M. Are you interested in studying abroad, participating in global service-learning or experiential learning abroad? Seven named scholarships are available for eligible students:

Priority will be given to students planning to study abroad in 2016. The deadline for your application is Oct. 15.
