Free fitness assessments

Fitness assessments are designed to evaluate your health and fitness, including your current fitness level and health risk for disease. A variety of health and fitness categories will be assessed including:

  • Muscular strength and endurance
  • Aerobic capacity
  • Height and weight
  • Waist-to-hip Ratio and girth measurements
  • Flexibility assessment (sit and reach)

Bulldogs for Heart Health

Please join the All Staff Council for Bulldogs for Heart Healthy on Thursday, Feb. 4, 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m. We will use The Knapp Center track and court for walking, hula hooping, jumping rope, tables with snacks and health info, blood pressure checks,and body composition screenings. You can even pick up some healthy recipe cards and enter your name into a drawing for a chance to win a parking pass!

Recreational services will also offer some “sample” classes for staff to try out during this time:

11–11:30 a.m.: Trax—a strength and cardio interval class

11:40 a.m.–12:05 p.m.: Dance Express

12:15–12:45 p.m.: Mat Worx

1–1:30 p.m.: Pilates

Complete your online wellness assessment this week

Don’t forget to complete your online assessment via Wellmark by Dec. 4. You must complete the online assessment in addition to the biometrics screening to receive the wellness incentive (approximately $300 off your Drake health insurance in 2016). Find instructions on completing the assessment here.

Orientation leaders information session
Want to help welcome new students to Drake University? Want to get involved? Want an on-campus job this summer? Consider becoming an orientation leader!

Orientation leaders are dedicated to providing incoming students and their families with all of the information and resources necessary to ensure their transition to Drake is a smooth and enjoyable one.

We need you to help make this happen. Each year we recruit current Drake students to become part of the orientation leader staff. Orientation leaders play a vital role in this exciting process, working closely with new students and their families on a wide variety of topics including academics, student involvement, housing options, and more.

We highly encourage you to attend one of three information sessions:

  • Wednesday, Nov 18, 7 p.m.—Olmsted Center, Room 310/311
  • Friday, Dec. 4, 1 p.m.—Olmsted Center, TMR 132
  • Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, 12 p.m.—Olmsted Center, Room 310/311

Join Drake Recreational Services on Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Sussman Theater for an informational session about diabetes and what you can do to improve your lifestyle.

Get your glow on

Improve your personal wellness by participating in the GLOW RUN on Friday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. in Helmick Commons hosted by Residence Hall Association and Drake Wellness. The first 60 registrants will receive a free water bottle and glow accessories! This 2K on-campus run will help you improve personal fitness and help you gain awareness of Drake Wellness Center services before the holidays begin. Register by emailing wellness@drake.edu or by completing the waiver.

Still haven’t completed your biometrics screening?

Faculty and staff on Drake’s health plan can save $300 in 2016 by participating in the Wellness Incentive Program. You simply need to complete a biometrics screening and online wellness assessment this fall.

The deadline to complete your biometrics screening at a participating Hy-Vee store has been extended to Nov. 20. No on-campus biometrics screening appointments remain.

Full details and a list of participating Hy-Vee stores can be found here. You must complete your screening at a Hy-Vee location by Nov. 20. Hy-Vee will submit your screening results to Wellmark, which will automatically update your online assessment.

If you’ve completed your biometrics screening, don’t forget to complete your online assessment via Wellmark by Dec. 4. You must complete both the screening and the online assessment to receive the wellness incentive.

Don’t forget your biometrics screening!

If you’re on Drake’s health plan, you can save $300 off your health insurance premium in 2016 by participating in the Drake Wellness Incentive. In order to qualify, you must complete a biometrics screening and online wellness assessment. Only four dates for on-campus screenings remain!

On-campus biometrics screenings will take place between 6:30 and 10:30 a.m. in the Bell Center on the following dates: Nov. 3, 4, 10, and 13.

To schedule your screening, click here, and use the username DRAKEU and password SCREEN2015 to log in. Once you sign up, please make a note of your screening date and time, as you will not receive a reminder email.

If you need to cancel your on-campus screening, email jennifer.umphfleet@unitypoint.org with your name and date and time of cancelled appointment. You will need to re-register online for a new appointment. Changes can be made up to 48 hours prior to the screen time.

Signed up but don’t remember your date/time? Look at your received or deleted emails for an email confirmation sent to you by unitypointhealth.desmoines@gmail.com with the subject: Health Screen Confirmation.

You can also complete your biometrics screening at a participating Hy-Vee by Nov. 13. Full details and a list of participating Hy-Vee stores can be found here. Hy-Vee will submit your screening results to Wellmark, which will automatically update your online assessment.

If you’ve already completed your biometrics screening, don’t forget to take the online wellness assessment via myWellmark by Dec. 4.

Massage therapy for faculty, staff, and students

Drake Wellness is again making massage therapy available to Drake faculty, staff, and students in the Bell Center Room 113. Special Drake rates are offered at $30/30 minutes, $50/60 minutes, and $75/90 minutes. Add-ons and gift certificates for massage are also available.
