Lunch and learn with community leaders

The Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute will host a series of lunch and learns with community leaders to discuss different topics of leadership and their real-world application. The first “Lunch with Leaders” event will be held Friday, March 25, 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. in Pomerantz Conference Room. Organization Development and Leadership Consultant Gary Walljasper will speak on the topic of “Coaching: How to ask the right question.” Register online or contact krysta.thomason@drake.edu or meghan.blancas@drake.edu with questions.

Teach in China Program informational sessions
You are invited to an informational session about Drake’s Teach in China Program. Graduating seniors and alumni can hear from Drake graduates who have participated previously. All sessions are to be held on Drake’s campus, but we welcome remote participants via Skype for non-Drake applicants. Want to help welcome new students to Drake University? Want to get involved? Want an on-campus job this summer? Consider becoming an orientation leader!

Orientation leaders are dedicated to providing incoming students and their families with all of the information and resources necessary to ensure their transition to Drake is a smooth and enjoyable one.

We need you to help make this happen. Each year we recruit current Drake students to become part of the orientation leader staff. Orientation leaders play a vital role in this exciting process, working closely with new students and their families on a wide variety of topics including academics, student involvement, housing options, and more.

We highly encourage you to attend one of three information sessions:

  • Wednesday, Nov 18, 7 p.m.—Olmsted Center, Room 310/311
  • Friday, Dec. 4, 1 p.m.—Olmsted Center, TMR 132
  • Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, 12 p.m.—Olmsted Center, Room 310/311

Drake Recreational Services and APhA-ASP Operation Diabetes present the Diabetes Awareness Week Wellness Challenge!
Plan to exercise three of the six days from Sunday, Nov. 15–Friday, Nov. 20 AND sign up to participate in the 2K Glow Fun Run on Nov. 20—you will receive a prize! Diabetes Awareness Week Wellness Presentation
Type 2 Diabetes is a serious health condition that has now reached near-epidemic levels. Understanding more about diabetes can help spread awareness to fight this disease. Join Drake Recreational Services on Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Sussman Theater for an informational session about diabetes and what you can do to improve your lifestyle.

“Do Less, Achieve More”

The annual Richard & Lila Sussman Fall Leadership Conference will take place Sunday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Olmsted Center. The Sussman Fall Leadership Conference is designed for students who are interested in or are currently involved with leadership on campus and/or in the community.

The conference theme this semester is “Do Less, Achieve More” and the keynote speaker, James Robilotta, will speak on “More Action, Less Title: Empowering Student Leaders To Do More” to encourage intentional and responsible leadership. Attend breakout sessions on professional and personal development, community building, and strategic/organizational leadership. The conference concludes with a complementary meal—this year we’re having breakfast for dinner!

Attention first years: Apply for ELM

The Emerging Leaders Model (ELM) is a program sponsored by the Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute. ELM is a six-week program designed to provide first-year students the opportunity to develop their personal vision of leadership, learn about leadership at Drake, and connect with current student leaders and other first-year students. The program involves attending staff-led, weekly workshops that will help you develop leadership skills through interactive activities and discussions. The completion of the ELM program will serve as a foundation for future leadership positions on campus, in the community, and beyond.

This fall, ELM will take place weekly from Sept. 29 through Nov. 11. If you are interested in participating, please attend one of our informational sessions this week. All info sessions take place in Olmsted 132 (across from Underground Fitness):

You can register for the program prior to the information sessions (though you are encouraged to attend a session for specific program details). Register by Sept. 25.

Apply for the Adams Academy

Sponsored by the Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute, the Adams Academy is a yearlong leadership program designed for upper-division students (sophomores through seniors, and Pharmacy students in their first or second year). Through a series of weekly workshops, guest speakers, special events, and community service, students will learn more about the individual, group, and societal levels of leadership.

The informational sessions are held at the same time as the Adams Academy events throughout the year. Joining the Adams Academy requires a commitment to attend weekly leadership workshops, completion of an approved community service project, and a reflection summary. At the end of the program students will be honored at the Adams Convocation in April.
