Attend the CLAC Consortium Conference

Faculty and students are invited to attend the 10th conference of the Cultures and Languages Across Curriculum (CLAC) Consortium on Friday, Oct. 21, and Saturday, Oct. 22, sponsored by World Languages and Cultures. The conference will explore definitions and comprehensive strategies for infusing foreign language, as well as intercultural skill sets and competencies for developing a global mindset, throughout the curriculum. The 2016 theme—Developing Responsible Global Citizenship Through CLAC—emerges from Drake’s longstanding commitment to provide “an exceptional learning environment that prepares students for meaningful personal lives, professional accomplishments, and responsible global citizenship.”

The primary purpose of CLAC is to provide students with opportunities to use their linguistic and cultural competencies outside of the language classroom. To show our commitment to CLAC, 25 Drake professors now include CLAC options for their students as a result of CLAC workshop participation the past two summers.

New furniture arriving in Olmsted Thursday

During the summer we worked with a student representative team along with a professional furniture design team to modify current furniture settings and create spaces to match student needs and preferences. We are excited to announce the selected furniture will be arriving on Thursday, Oct. 13. Please expect some disruptions during this time. Thank you for your patience during the Book Store transition and everyone’s willingness to make this a success.

The new, new Blue is here!

The Fall 2016 issue of Blue arrives on campus today. Using feedback from our online reader survey, the alumni magazine has a new look and feel to increase engagement while reducing cost. As usual, hard copies will be dropped off in Kinne, the Alumni House, Cole Hall, Cowles Library, The Point, and all academic units. Another ranking win for Drake

The inaugural Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education ranking of U.S. colleges placed Drake University at 149 in a list that includes more than 1,000 schools nationwide. The new rankings are based on 15 key indicators that assess colleges and universities in four areas: outcomes, resources, engagement, and environment. The list combines public and private institutions of all sizes into a single list. Drake performed exceptionally well in the measurement of value added to salaries for graduates, scoring 93.5 out of 100.

The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Rankings is pioneering in that it puts student success and learning at its heart. The 15 performance indicators on which it is based have been selected in order to answer the questions that matter the most when choosing a university. History of football exhibit at Cowles Library

The University Archives & Special Collections honors the Year of the Fan celebration of “Mr. Drake” Paul F. Morrison with a special exhibit: “Fights Like a Bulldog for Victory:  A History of Drake Football.”  Created by Political Papers Archivist Hope Grebner, the exhibit is in the Collier Room on the second floor of Cowles Library.  Along with reproductions, the exhibit also includes original documents, historical photographs, and memorabilia. The exhibit is part of a collaboration between Drake Athletics and University Archives to preserve the rich tradition of sports at Drake. It is viewable through December and is free and open to the public during Cowles Library hours.

Fine Arts events: Week of Oct. 3

Drake Symphony Orchestra to present all-Russian concert
Drake Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of the season will be Sunday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Sheslow Auditorium; it will be an all-Russian concert. The program will open with Mossorgskys Khovanshchila’s “Dawn Over the River Moscow.” The Drake String Ensemble will then perform Kalinikov’s Serenade for Strings. The evening concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Symphony No. 1.”

Drake Chamber Choir to perform “Requiem”
The Drake Chamber Choir will perform Gabriel Faure’s radiant “Requiem” with a professional orchestra and choirs from Valley, Waukee, Urbandale, and Dowling Catholic high schools on Sunday, Oct. 9, 3 p.m., at St. Ambrose Cathedral, 607 High St., in downtown Des Moines. A pre-concert session will be given by Tim Knepper, professor of philosophy, and Dr. Allen Zagoren, associate professor of practice in public administration, at 1:45 p.m. in the St. Ambrose Parish Center, located immediately west of the church. There is no admission charge for the concert or pre-concert session, although a freewill offering will be taken to help defray concert expenses.

Department of Theatre Arts presents Doubt: a parable
Drake Department of Theatre Arts is opening their 2016-2017 season October 6 with the controversial, religious drama, Doubt: a parable by John Patrick Shanley.

Doubt: a parable runs Thursday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 9 in the Coleman Studio Theatre of the Harmon Fine Arts Center. Performances will start at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 6-Oct. 8 and 2 p.m. on Oct 9. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for students and senior citizens.
