“The First 1,000 Days: An Interview with Roger Thurow”

Before you figure out how to measure a year in 525,600 minutes or become a great success in 10,000 hours, you must get through the first 1,000 days.

After three decades at The Wall Street Journal as a foreign correspondent, Roger Thurow now serves as senior fellow on global food and agriculture for the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and recently authored The First 1,000 Days: A Crucial Time for Mothers and Children–And the World. On Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. in Sussman Theater, join him for an exciting interview as he explores through storytelling why the first 1,000 days go far beyond mother and child as one of the most critical times for the world.

Student fan bus to men’s soccer—Oct. 11

All Drake students are encouraged to “pull up” on Cownie Soccer Complex Tuesday night as your Bulldogs face off against Bradley at 7 p.m. Bus transportation is limited to the first 100 students who register at www.DrakeTix.com/soccerbus. The bus will depart from the Olmsted Parking Lot at 6 p.m. and return immediately following the match. Questions? Survey on athletic and recreational programming

Drake wants to continue a strong tradition of excellence in athletic and recreational programming. When it comes to the type of programming offered at Drake, student feedback is critical. All students are encouraged to complete this short survey designed to gauge student interest in athletic and recreational programming, including intramural, club, and intercollegiate athletic programs.

Even if you are not interested in additional programming or are satisfied with current offerings, it is important that we have your responses. This information will be used to help Drake evaluate its current intramural, club, and intercollegiate athletic programs. This information is also helpful in our efforts to comply with the gender equity law known as Title IX.

Cowles Library to offer J-Term course on archives

Still need to fulfill the Information Literacy AOI? Want to learn more about archives? Political Papers Archivist Hope Grebner is offering an Information Literacy AOI course this J-Term, and there are still spots available! Secrets of the Vault: An Introduction to Archival Methods and Services (LIB 052), will serve as an experiential introduction to the responsibilities of archivists by providing an overview of the principles upon which archival theory is based. Through practical and hands-on assignments involving the collections in the Drake University Archives and Special Collections, readings, and discussions, the course will establish a basic understanding of the archival profession. Attend The Way Up Conference

Make plans to attend the 30th annual The Way Up Conference on Nov. 3–4 in Coralville. With the theme of “30 Years of Inspiring Excellence for Women in Higher Education,” this conference will inspire, motivate, and energize as you join other women on their way up in higher education. Benefits town hall discussions

In anticipation of the 2017 plan year, the University Benefits Committee (UBC) together with Human Resources will sponsor town hall discussions of Drake’s health and dental plans during the upcoming annual open enrollment period. Wellmark representatives and Drake benefit consultants will also be present to answer participant questions during the discussions, scheduled as follows:

Last week of biometrics screenings!

Time is running out to participate in the Drake Wellness Incentive! If you’re on Drake’s health plan and wish to save approximately $300 off your health insurance premium in 2017, you must complete a wellness screening and online wellness assessment.

These screenings are being held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week in the lower level of the Olmsted. This is the last week of the screenings and there are limited times available so if you are interested, you must register now. To schedule your screening, click here. Sign in with username DRAKE and password SCREEN (all CAPS). Find additional information in the On-campus Health Screening Scheduling Guide.

Did you sign up for an on-campus screening but don’t remember your appointment date/time? Check your received, spam, or deleted emails for an email confirmation sent to you by UnityPoint with the subject: Health Screen Confirmation. It will be sent to the email address you entered on your registration. Questions regarding the on-campus UnityPoint screenings should be sent to unitypointhealth.desmoines@gmail.com.

If you need to cancel your on-campus screening, send an email to jennifer.umphfleet@unitypoint.org with your name and date and time of cancelled appointment. You will need to re-register online for a new appointment. Changes can be made up to 48 hours prior to the screen time if slots are still available.

If you have already completed your biometric screening, don’t forget to complete your online wellness assessment on wellmark.com by Nov. 15.
