Seeking volunteers for Sussman Leadership Conference

The annual Richard & Lila Sussman Fall Leadership Conference will take place Sunday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Olmsted Center. The Sussman Fall Leadership Conference is designed for students who are interested in or are currently involved with leadership on campus.

The conference theme this semester is “Do Less, Achieve More” and the keynote speaker, James Robilotta, will speak on “More Action, Less Title: Empowering Student Leaders To Do More”.

I am looking for students, faculty, and staff to facilitate breakout sessions on a range of topics that will encourage attendees to be intentional with their involvement on campus and to explore leadership in the following areas:

  • Personal/Professional Development: Sessions will inform students’ understanding of their leadership identity as it relates to their activities on campus and beyond. Potential topics: time management, effective communication, avoiding burnout
  • Strategic and Organizational Leadership: Workshops will provide effective tips and training that student leaders can use in their organizations and on campus. Potential topics: event planning, navigating Drake policies, motivating members
  • Community Building: Workshops will build students’ understanding of effective community partnerships at Drake and in the Des Moines area. Potential topics: creating Des Moines partnerships, intentional philanthropy, collaborating with other organizations

Each session will reach 20–30 students and should last up to 50 minutes.

Drake men’s basketball walk-on tryout meeting

Become an MVP

The Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program is looking for passionate students to become certified trainers through the MVP Peer Ambassador Program on campus for the 2015–2016 year. As an ambassador, you will conduct mini trainings across campus to student and/or staff groups throughout the year. Attention first years: Apply for ELM

The Emerging Leaders Model (ELM) is a program sponsored by the Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute. ELM is a six-week program designed to provide first-year students the opportunity to develop their personal vision of leadership, learn about leadership at Drake, and connect with current student leaders and other first-year students. The program involves attending staff-led, weekly workshops that will help you develop leadership skills through interactive activities and discussions. The completion of the ELM program will serve as a foundation for future leadership positions on campus, in the community, and beyond.

This fall, ELM will take place weekly from Sept. 29 through Nov. 11. If you are interested in participating, please attend one of our informational sessions this week. All info sessions take place in Olmsted 132 (across from Underground Fitness):

Apply for the Adams Academy

Sponsored by the Donald V. Adams Leadership Institute, the Adams Academy is a yearlong leadership program designed for upper-division students (sophomores through seniors, and Pharmacy students in their first or second year). Through a series of weekly workshops, guest speakers, special events, and community service, students will learn more about the individual, group, and societal levels of leadership.

The informational sessions are held at the same time as the Adams Academy events throughout the year. Joining the Adams Academy requires a commitment to attend weekly leadership workshops, completion of an approved community service project, and a reflection summary. At the end of the program students will be honored at the Adams Convocation in April.

Faculty Senate recap

Faculty Senate held its first meeting of 2015–2016 last Wednesday. Highlights from the reports to Senate included:

  • President Martin provided an update on his efforts to get to know groups and individuals within the Drake and Des Moines communities.
  • Interim Provost Lenz announced 22 faculty searches are underway for 2016–2017.
  • Student Senate Vice President Zach Blevins indicated the students are setting their goals and committee memberships.
  • Craig Owens and Kevin Saunders discussed the status of the HLC accreditation process and the next steps in the process.

Under New Business, a case was put forth for Faculty Senate to lead efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion on campus.

Additionally, senators had a conversation regarding Senate priorities including the Drake Curriculum.

The meeting concluded with a discussion encouraging the 2015–2016 Faculty Senate membership to be proactively engaged in the Senate processes, issues, and conversations.

Speaking Center now open

Drake University’s Speaking Center in Cowles Library is now open for the fall semester. Students can book appointments online to see a tutor for help in researching, preparing, composing, and delivering speeches and presentations or for support with other situations requiring oral communication skills. Students, faculty, and staff members can also reserve the Speaking Studio to practice and record presentations alone or in small groups.

Location and Hours: The Speaking Center is located in Cowles Library, Room 18, on the lower floor just down the stairs and through the right door of the main entrance. Hours are:

  • Monday/Wednesday 3:30–8 p.m.
  • Tuesday/Thursday 11 a.m.—12 p.m. and 2–5 pm
  • Sundays 2–4 p.m.

Tutors are also available outside those hours on an individual basis, if scheduling allows.

To make an appointment, visit http://library.drake.edu/speaking. Appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes each, and students are encouraged to visit multiple times while preparing for a single event if they wish. Any questions or concerns should be directed to speaking-help@drake.edu.

Speaking Center Services: Speaking Center tutors are students with experience and training in speech pedagogy who are prepared to assist students when selecting and narrowing topics, organizing ideas, drafting and revising an outline, preparing visual aids, and practicing delivery. The Speaking Center’s new location provides access to research and reference librarians who can help students gather resources. Our facilities feature a tutoring room and a speaking studio, where presentations can be recorded and saved by students, faculty, and staff members.
