How to help others during COVID-19 pandemic

For most, if not all of us, the coronavirus creates anxiety and fear.  We take steps to protect ourselves and our family.  But beyond those basic instincts, there is a common thread among many to reach out and help others. The question then becomes, how?

Much of what you need to know can be found on the Drake University Community Engagement websiteThe United Way Volunteer website is a great resource as well. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Check on your neighbors. Call or text your neighbors (especially elderly neighbors) to make sure they’re doing okay. If there is anything they need that you can provide, offer to leave it outside their front door. And if you feel comfortable going out, consider knocking on the door of an elderly neighbor and chatting through the storm door to offer a bit of comfort.

Donate. There are many ways you can do this. Contribute to Drake’s Virtual Food Drive or the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences’ virtual fundraiser for the Food Bank of Iowa. Consider donating blood, or drop off canned goods and toiletries to one of the Drake Neighborhood’s Little Free Pantries.

Put your creative skills to use. You’ve heard the stories of drive-by parades to celebrate a loved one’s birthday; singing, dancing, or playing a musical instrument to lift the spirits of others from a safe distance; and creating fun videos to share with family and friends.  Find out what your passion or talent is and find a way to share it safely. It could be sewing face masks or writing letters to a local nursing home (Ramsey Village is in our Drake neighborhood). How about getting your family together and using chalk to write motivational messages on your sidewalk and driveway? The options are limitless.

Support your local businesses. Many of us are already ordering food from our local restaurants either drive-thru, delivery, or curb-side pick-up. Check online to see what other small local businesses are offering delivery or curbside pick-up options and consider making a purchase.

Find a way to say thank-you to those on the front lines. The best way we can say thank-you is to follow the CDC recommendations and wash our hands, practice social distancing, and stay home if we are sick. If you want to take it a step further, find out if your local hospital is accepting a delivery of a few pizzas. And don’t forget to thank all our front line and essential workers — including our own faculty and staff.

Although we are socially distanced, we are still best when we work together … six feet apart.

New Teams chat groups create sense of community

All Staff Council created two more chat groups in TEAMS. A “Parents Group” and a “Wellness Group.” The parents chat allows parents to share challenges as well as ideas on how to make it a positive experience with your children at home. The wellness group allows members to share ways to be active and to be a source of motivation to keep you on track. Both groups serve as a connection point and source of community during this time.

If you would like to be added to the “Parents Group,” please send an email to jenny.jones@drake.edu. If you would like to be added to the “Wellness Group,” please send an email to linda.feiden@drake.edu. Each group is limited to 100 people.

University travel suspension extended through May 31

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the University has extended its travel suspension policy through at least May 31, 2020. The policy states: Any travel outside of the state of Iowa on behalf of the University is suspended, unless deemed critical and approved by the senior administrator in your area. The suspension applies to all University-sponsored travel, including international, academic, athletic, conferences and workshops, and research-related travel. If you are seeking an exception to this policy, please work through your direct supervisor, who will escalate the request to senior administration.

Temporary COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Leave plan

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a Supplemental Paid Leave plan is now available to all benefit-eligible employees. This plan offers employees enhanced time-off benefits to be used for personal health situations or to care for children or other dependents as a result of the current pandemic. The plan is effective April 1, 2020.

View the full plan.

Read a list of FAQs regarding the plan and other time off provisions:

Q. How long will the Supplemental Paid Leave plan be in effect?
A. The plan is designed to address the immediate challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and will be in effect until at least May 31, 2020. An end date will be determined when more is known about the evolving pandemic and associated public health risk.

Q. Do I have to use my vacation or personal leave first before applying for Supplemental Paid Leave?
A. No. Supplemental Paid Leave is available once sick leave accruals are depleted, regardless of whether you have vacation or personal time remaining. You do not have to use your vacation or personal leave before applying for Supplemental Paid Leave.

Q. I am a faculty member. How does the Supplemental Paid Leave plan apply to me?
A. The Drake University Faculty Short Term Disability Policy provides pay continuation when a faculty member is unable to work due to illness. In other situations, where circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic require time away, including to care for a family member, the Supplemental Leave Plan provides added paid time off options.

Q. How do I apply for Supplemental Leave?
A.  If you need to use supplemental leave for a qualifying situation, please complete the Qualtrics form.

Q. How do I record Supplemental Paid Leave on my timecard or monthly leave report?
A.  You and your manager will receive an email response following submission of your request to use the leave. Non-exempt employees will record the time off in the Supplemental Paid Leave area of the timesheet, and exempt employees will submit the Supplemental Paid Leave on the monthly leave report.

Virtual Admitted Student Days yield record participation

Admitted Students Day is a time where Bulldogs from every corner of campus come together, working to shine a spotlight on the incredible things that happen at Drake each day. Every year, their hard work pays off as high school students from across the world attend these visit days to find that Drake is the place they want to spend the next phase of their lives learning and growing.

This year, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University made the decision to recreate the experience online, allowing prospective students to attend remotely. On March 27 and April 3, Drake held its first Virtual Admitted Students programs. More than 450 students from over 30 states and 10 countries participated—a record for any group visit program!

During the virtual visits, potential new students and their families connected with Drake students, staff, and faculty to see a mix of live and pre-recorded content. Administrators answered students’ questions about financial aid, residence life, campus safety and health, and everything that makes Drake home. Professors from each college gave students a glimpse into academic life at Drake, including virtual classes, and students from all over campus filmed vlogs and campus tours.

Thanks to the adaptability and hard work from Drake students, faculty, and staff, the Admissions team in close collaboration with University Communications and Marketing, was able to virtually bring students helpful and engaging content designed to answer common questions and to replicate the information they would have received during an on-campus visit. Students who attended the virtual visit overwhelmingly described it as fun, welcoming, informative, and friendly.

High school students didn’t ask to be making such a pivotal decision in the midst of such unprecedented global circumstances, but they are making the most of it, and so are we. We are #draketogether, and will continue to work together to bring the Drake experience to as many future Bulldogs as possible.

Campus Mail, Student Services operational updates

Mail Operations: We are still delivering mail on campus with limited/consolidated routes. We will deliver mail to normal departmental mail rooms regularly. Our delivery hours during this period of social distancing are 8 a.m.–3 p.m. We have limited staffing on campus, so we are not always available at the mail room during this time. Please feel free to email if you have questions (campusmailoperations@drake.edu). We’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Students living on campus can pick up their mail between the hours of 2:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m., Monday–Friday, in Lower Olmsted.

Students that are no longer living on campus will have their mail returned to sender. Please make sure to update your addresses for the remainder of the semester to your current location, especially any saved addresses or subscription services.

Student Services Center: We are still staffing the SSC from 8 a.m.–3 p.m., Monday–Friday. If a time comes when this is no longer possible, we will post an update, and will switch to service by appointment only.

If you need assistance with a physical ID card, keys, or a parking pass, you may still visit us in Olmsted. If your issue or question can instead be addressed with an email or phone call, we encourage you to reach out with one of those methods to limit contact on campus. You can email studentservices@drake.edu, or call 515-271-2000 or 515-271-4748 (Sara Heijerman) for assistance.

Thank you for your flexibility during this time.
