Summer Language Institute: English classes online

Drake University’s Intensive English Program (IEP) is now offering an online Summer Language Institute for those who wish to improve their English skills. Click here to view course fees and additional information.

Courses will run from July 5–30 and will follow a two-track format: An Academic English track for those who are pursuing or planning to pursue a degree in the United States and a General English track for those who want to improve practical English skills.

Join the ‘Walk this May’ challenge

This is a reminder to join our upcoming Walk this May team step challenge.

This team challenge will run through the month of May. A kick-off meeting will be held via Zoom on April 30 for all participants. Team captains will report weekly step totals and participants will receive motivational emails, including an update on team points. At the end of the month there will be a challenge celebration via Zoom, with a prize package awarded to the participants of the winning team.

You may register as a team of four or five people or register individually and you will be placed on a team. To register, send an email to linda.feiden@drake.edu with your team members (or just yourself if registering alone) by April 28. Let’s get moving!

Shout-outs are a great way to recognize your colleagues for their hard work, talent, support, and creativity. Giving a shout-out is quick and easy—simply write one or two sentences thanking a co-worker or team for a job well-done, going the extra mile, or showing support during an ever-changing year.

Bell Center update: Relays hours, golf league, intramurals

Relays hours for Saturday, April 24:
Bell Center: Closed
Underground Fitness: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

Faculty/staff golf league:
Drake faculty/staff golf league will be a doubles league held at Grandview  Golf Course/A.H. Blank Golf Course in Des Moines. Nine holes will be played each week on Wednesdays with tee times starting at 4 p.m. for Grandview and 4:30 p.m. for A.H. Blank. The first day of play will be May 19 and will continue through July 28 (10 weeks).

Temporary expansion of food stamp (SNAP) benefits for students

Under regular Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) rules, students enrolled at least half-time in an institution of higher education are ineligible for SNAP unless they meet one of the exemptions. However, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, temporarily expands SNAP eligibility to allow students who either:

  1. Are eligible to participate in federal work study (FWS) during the regular academic year, as determined by the institution of higher education, or
  2. Have an expected family contribution (EFC) of zero in the current academic year.

Eligibility for FWS is included on the financial aid notifications that Drake sends to students. Additional, FWS eligibility can be viewed in a student’s Financial Aid Portal. The EFC is listed on the Student Aid Report (SAR), which can be accessed by logging in at www.studentaid.gov.

The Adams Leadership Awards are an annual, campus-wide tradition to celebrate the achievements of student leaders and organizations at Drake. Each spring we honor students and organizations who have made valuable contributions to the campus community through their outstanding commitment to leadership.

4+1 Program in Applied Behavior Analysis

The master’s program in Applied Behavior Analysis has launched a 4+1 program (currently open to juniors who have met all the prerequisites: 3.0 GPA, junior standing, PSY60 and SPED153). Applied Behavior Analysis builds upon the science of learning and behavior to address and address and impact socially significant behavior change across various settings (e.g., clinical, school, organizational) with different populations (e.g., children with autism or other developmental disabilities, children who engage in challenging behavior, adults in residential settings, organizational behavior management). Re-examining Pragmatism in Constitutional Interpretation: 2021 Drake Constitutional Law Symposium

The Drake Constitutional Law Center will host the 2021 Constitutional Law Symposium on Saturday, April 17, from 8:40 a.m. to 12 p.m. The program will be delivered virtually via Zoom. This year, speakers will examine pragmatism as a method of constitutional interpretation.

Pragmatism is considered the most significant contribution by the United States to global philosophy. Ironically, pragmatism is not considered one of the dominant methods of constitutional interpretation used by the Supreme Court. Originalism receives much public attention. Its focus is largely on what the Constitution’s framers would have wanted, though there are many variations.

This symposium is meant to re-examine pragmatism in constitutional interpretation from several different perspectives. These include feminist approaches, race-conscious views, Posnerian contexts, empirically grounded types, brand new pluralistic theories, and criticisms. It will also highlight the strengths, weaknesses, and relationships between constitutional pragmatism, and other interpretation methods.

The symposium will feature a slate of nationally renowned scholars discussing these important topics:
