Community service leave benefit

Drake recognizes the importance of community involvement and encourages employees to participate in volunteer and service activities. The community service leave benefit allows non-bargaining, non-grant funded staff employees to voluntarily participate, with pay, in community service activities that occur during regularly-scheduled work hours, with manager approval.

Full time staff may receive up to eight hours of paid time to engage in community service leave each fiscal year. Part-time staff, working 20 or more hours per week, may receive up to four hours of paid community service leave each fiscal year.

Volunteer Ideas
• Visit your local school and read to children
• Lend a hand to Habitat for Humanity on Oct. 5
• Provide assistance at your local food bank
• Chaperone a school field trip
• Help at a Special Olympics event
• Ring the bell for Salvation Army
• Serve a meal at a homeless shelter
• Help clean up a park on Earth Day

Employees wishing to provide community service leave must complete a community service leave request form.  For more information, please view the community service leave policy.

Walktober Step Challenge with Des Moines University and Wesley Life

Drake has challenged Des Moines University and Wesley Life to a step challenge. We are putting together a team and want you to participate.

During the month of October team members from all three institutions will track their daily steps. You may use a pedometer, fitness tracker, or smart phone app. Any movement that records steps counts, including walking, running, and fitness classes. You will be provided with a journal to make recording easy and receive fun facts and tips along the way.

At the end of the month the institution with the highest average step total will win a traveling trophy and bragging rights for the year. Individual prizes will be awarded as well. We need your help to win that trophy!

This event is open to all faculty, staff, and students so spread the word. To register, email Linda Feiden at linda.feiden@drake.edu. The deadline to register is Friday, Sept. 28.

Weekly volleyball pick-up game

Take advantage of Drake’s new sand volleyball court with a weekly pick-up game of volleyball every Thursday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Games will begin Thursday, Sept. 13, over the lunch hour and will continue throughout the year. Faculty, staff, and students are all welcome to play. While the weather permits, games will be held outdoors at the new sand court and move indoors to the Bell Center once it gets too cold.

Request to be added to the email distribution list.

Three volleyballs and a rake are available to be checked out of the Student Life Office in Olmsted. Equipment is also available from the front desk of the Bell Center.

Starfish student success platform training for faculty

We are excited to formally announce the implementation of our new student success platform, Starfish. Starfish is an academic early alert and communication system. For phase one of the rollout, 107 faculty will participate in progress surveys, which allow faculty to easily “flag” students recognized as needing additional support. Once flagged, students receive recommendations and contact information for tutoring, advising and counseling, and services that can help them achieve academic and personal success. Faculty also have the opportunity to give students “kudos” for positive reinforcement.

There are two upcoming training sessions for faculty participating in phase one:

  1. Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 1-2 p.m. in Collier-Scripps, Room 235
  2. Friday, Sep. 7, from 10-11 a.m. in Aliber, Room 204

Starfish is:

Empowering: Starfish provides students with the information and feedback they need to make connections and become better self-advocates, thus becoming more autonomous.
Efficient: Faculty members contribute classroom observations with just a few clicks. Instructors, student services staff, and advisors can easily access and contact a student’s network.
Effective: Powerful positive encouragement is provided through kudos, and feedback on areas for improvement is provided through flags. A “close the loop” feature allows all involved to know when an issue has been resolved.

The link to Starfish is located on the MyDrake portal in two places: 1) Faculty and Advising section and 2) Administrative Tools section.

For more information, visit drake.edu/starfish, or contact the Starfish administrators at starfish@drake.edu with questions.

Cars when and where you need them
