Drake launches revamped M.B.A.

The CBPA is launching a significantly enhanced Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program designed to better meet the needs of today’s working students.

Beginning this fall, classes within the M.B.A. program will be offered in a hybrid model—the only one of its kind in central Iowa—that blends the convenience of online coursework with the benefits of intensive classroom experience. About half of course time will be completed online, with the other half completed on Drake’s campus.
Students in Drake’s hybrid M.B.A. program have the opportunity to:

  • Apply business analytics to become a strategic leader
  • Acquire and hone sought-after project management skills
  • Connect with Des Moines business leaders as a core part of the learning experience
  • Customize their M.B.A. with a specialization that fits their career interests
  • Develop leadership skills in courses focused on expanding business acumen

What do you do?
I’m an assistant professor of international business, and the main course I teach is the globalization seminar, which is required of all undergrad business majors. So by the numbers, I get to work with almost a third of all Drake undergraduates at some point in their time here.

How did you end up at Drake and in teaching?
I spent 10 years in corporate America, and one day I was in a personal development seminar in which they told us to make a Venn diagram of passions, talents, and the least amount of money we were willing to make. Upon completion of my diagram, I decided I was not in the right position. The very next week, there was an article in the Wall Street Journal about the shortage of Ph.D. professors in business. I talked with some advisers and decided to take the plunge.

You’ve studied (and experienced) a lot abroad …
I spent a year of undergrad in Europe, part was in France and part was in Russia. In Russia, I lived Krasnodar, not too far from Chechnya, so we were very close to the conflict [the outbreak of The First Chechen War happened at the time]. Most Thursdays we didn’t have class because there would be bomb threats at the university. I also spent a year teaching English in Brazil and have gone back there several times, including in 2014 for the World Cup. I speak Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Russian.

How do all these experiences affect how you teach?
My students hear a lot of stories; my experiences allow me to talk students about study abroad in a firsthand sort of way. It also helps me relate to the international students who enroll at Drake, because I understand the dynamics of what it’s like to be the only student who’s not from a certain place.

J-Term update

Leadership at Sea
On Friday, Jan. 8, Ambassador Mary Kramer (ret) spoke to the LEAD 100 Leadership at Sea class. Kramer is a well-known leader in Des Moines, having served as vice president of human resources for Wellmark and Younkers, as well as president of the Iowa Senate. In addition, she served as ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean during the George W. Bush administration.

During their trip to the Bahamas, the LEAD students will meet with and present gifts to Bahamian government officials and American Embassy employees. Kramer’s role as ambassador helped prepare the students for that experience by guiding them on the etiquette and protocol for those exchanges. She also spoke to the class about her book, More Than A Walk On the Beach: Confessions of an Unlikely Diplomat, which the students had all read.

Families, Lifestyles, and Annuity Tables: Why Corporations are Interested in Chile
Thanks to one of the University of the Andes Journalism and Mass Communication professors, Alejandro Garcia, we spent the morning at Channel 13.  They are the largest TV station in Chile.

We had an extensive tour, witnessed the live broadcast of their morning talk show, and had many people from many departments explain the workings of the station.  Our students were very excited!

I’m sharing a few photos from the visit: Molly Longman and Katherine Rousonelos, both of SJMC, seated at the news anchor desk; all the students live and on the “big screen”; all of us on the set of The Voice – Chile.
