Students attend dinner sponsored by Embassy of Japan

On Oct. 24, the Embassy of Japan sponsored a dinner for invited Drake students at Haiku. It was hosted by Mr. Yukito Ono, second secretary of the political section at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C., with the intent of learning about student perspectives on U.S.-Japan relations and the U.S. presidential campaign. The dinner was attended by five Drake students: Kerstin Donat, Sam Logterman, Kamryn Ryan, Brittany Spears, and Colin Timmerman. Professor Mary M. McCarthy, who teaches the Asian politics courses in the Department of Political Science, composed the guest list upon receiving the invitation from Mr. Ono, and attended the dinner with the students and Mr. Ono.

Faculty accomplishments: Nov. 7

Professors of librarianship present at the Iowa Library Association 2016 Conference
Claudia Frazer, professor of librarianship and coordinator of digital initiatives library, presented “21st Century Archives @ Drake: Linking Collections with the Curriculum & Strategic Plan” on Oct. 13 at the Iowa Library Association 2016 Conference in Dubuque, Iowa. Librarians and archivists from three Iowa institutions discussed initiatives they are executing to innovatively connect with their constituents. Claudia focused on how Archives and Special Collections at Cowles Library is strategically striving to connect its unique content with the curriculum.

On Oct. 14, Bruce Gilbert, professor of librarianship and director of library operations and technology, was one of three presenters of a session titled, “Open Educational Resources (OER) and Libraries: Promotion and Support” at the same conference. He concentrated on the theoretical and historical background of OER, and how OER can be an effective tactic in encouraging faculty to explore alternatives to traditional (and expensive) textbooks. Adjunct instructor begins second stint with Mannheim Streamroller
Anna Lackaff, adjunct instructor of music at Drake, will tour the country this holiday season as a keyboardist for Mannheim Steamroller. This will be Anna’s second year with the group, which has sold millions of albums worldwide. Mannheim Steamroller is best known for its Christmas albums that blend classical music with new age and rock stylings. Learn more about Anna in the Drake Newsroom.

SJMC news: Nov. 7

Drake student work was honored with 10 Pinnacle awards, including six first-place honors, at the recent College Media Association contest in Atlanta.

Two of the top three student magazines in the country were produced by Drake students: Drake Magazine won first place for magazine of the year, and The Annual won third place. Drake students also won the top two awards for general news story and first-place awards for podcast, photo portrait, and profile story. Drake Magazine and The Annual are extracurricular activities published by the University’s Board of Student Communications; Urban Plains is a multimedia website produced by the SJMC news, magazine, and electronic media majors as their senior capstone.

Keys to Excellence concert

Jeffrey Brown, associate professor of piano at Western Illinois University, will present the next concert of Drake’s Keys to Excellence Piano Series. The free concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, in Sheslow Auditorium. Brown will perform several selections, including:

Nov. 9: “The Resurgence of Collaborative Documentary in the Internet Era: Communities, New Technologies, & Social Narrative”
Location: Meredith Hall, Room 101
Time: 7–9 p.m.

Professor Diego Zavala is a member of the Department of Communications and Digital Arts, Tecnológico de Monterrey, Guadalajara campus, where he teaches film studies, screenwriting, and TV and film production. He has published articles and essays on documentary theory and Mexican cinema in academic journals, essay collections, and media publications. In addition, he has presented papers at national and international conferences in the United States, Mexico, France, Spain, and Portugal.

Professor Zavala will discuss how traditional and interactive documentary has become critical to the efforts of social groups in their attempts to promote social change and foster connections among communities. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Drake Center for the Humanities and The Principal Financial Group Center for Global Citizenship at Drake.

Wellness events in November

Holiday Trimmings Weight Challenge
Holiday Trimmings is a six-week program designed to encourage you to maintain or lose weight over the holiday season. If you have trouble dodging festive yet fattening foods like pecan pie, sausage stuffing, and egg nog, this challenge is for you.

Beginning and ending weights will be recorded, and throughout the challenge you will receive healthy holiday tips. Everyone who maintains or loses weight will be placed in a drawing for a chance to win prizes.

For more information or to register to participate please email Linda Feiden at linda.feiden@drake.edu with the subject line “Holiday Trimmings.” Deadline to register is Thursday, Nov. 17.

A packet of information will be sent to you. Read through the packet carefully and start the challenge on Monday, Nov. 21.

$10 Chair Massages
Step away from your worries and take a 10-minute vacation with a relaxing chair massage. On Nov. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Cowles Library Heritage/Collier Room and Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Olmsted Center Drake Room, licensed massage therapist Anne Boal will be giving chair massages.

Cost is $10 for a 10-minute chair massage paid directly to Anne Boal at the time of your appointment—correct change cash or check only. One name will be drawn after the event and that person will receive a gift certificate for a free 10-minute chair massage!

Food & Mood Presentation
When was the last time you monitored your mood as it relates to what and how much you eat? Emotional eating is a common response to stress and fatigue, but it can lead to unhealthy eating habits, which in turn can lead to chronic health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. In this presentation you’ll learn ways to track mood and food,and identify the difference between hunger, boredom, and stress eating.

Join us Nov. 15 at 10 a.m. in Olmsted Center, Rooms 310/311, for this fun and informative presentation. Johanna Dunlevy from Employee & Family Resources will be presenting.

Participants will earn BUILD (Bulldogs United in Learning Drake) credits and be entered into drawings for prizes each semester.
