Build a tiny home with your colleagues

The All Staff Council Special Events Committee invites Drake staff to participate in a service project benefitting Joppa Outreach on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Two shifts are available, 8 a.m.–12 p.m. and 1–5 p.m. Volunteers will help build tiny homes for Joppa’s Tiny Home Village, which serves homeless men and women in Des Moines. The build will take place in the parking lot across from the Alumni House. There are a limited number of spots available for these shifts, so please register online as soon as possible. This is a great opportunity to work together with fellow Drake staff to fill a community need! Light refreshments will be available and staff will have the opportunity to put their name in for a raffle for a parking pass for the 2018–2019 year.

Also, bring a canned food item or non-perishable items to help stock Drake’s Free Little Pantries!

If you are not available at this time but would still like to volunteer, shifts are available all week long as a part of DU Good Day. Click here for more information or to register. Full-time Drake employees are eligible for eight hours of Community Service Leave—check with your manager to see if this is an option.

From the office of Associate Provost Art Sanders

A reminder, the first Friday FYS lunch/discussion is this Friday, Sept. 8, at noon in Olmsted Center, TMR 133. These meetings are open to those with an interest in possibly teaching FYS in the future. It is too late to order a lunch, but you are welcome to bring your own and join us.

Our first meeting to begin planning the spring semester Engaged Citizen Experience with the theme Nourishing (Feeding) the World, is this Friday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. in Old Main, Room 208. Among the events we will be planning are our annual conference and a film series. For additional information contact me at arthur.sanders@drake.edu.

For the past two years, a group of faculty and staff have been meeting monthly to discuss issues related to creating inclusive learning environments. We will be continuing those meetings and opening them to anyone on campus who wishes to talk about the challenges, successes, and failures we have faced as we try to navigate this difficult issue. This semester the group will be meeting the second Monday of the month at 3:30 p.m. Thus, our first meeting will be at 3:30 on Monday, Sept. 11 in the Drake Room. If you have any questions, contact me at arthur.sanders@drake.edu.

New BCycle stations around campus

The Des Moines Regional Transit Authority (DART) and the Des Moines Bicycle Collective recently partnered to open four new BCycle stations around campus, offering students, faculty, and staff a convenient way to bike around campus and Des Moines.

One of the new stations—located in front of the Kinne Center on University Avenue—is a mobility hub, meaning it includes both a bus shelter and BCycle station.

How BCycle works:
Des Moines BCycle members can pick up a bike at any B-station and return it to that same station or any other B-station when they’re done. It’s like Redbox for bikes. Using their B-cards, members can quickly unlock a bike in seconds. Returning a bike is even easier. Just roll it into a dock and walk away.

Exclusive discount for Bulldogs:
Students, faculty, and staff can buy an annual pass at a discounted price of $20 (normally $80). An annual pass allows members to rent a BCycle for an unlimited amount of 1-hour rides. Purchase your BCycle membership at DesMoines.BCycle.com. Use your drake.edu email and the promotional code: Bulldogs.

Where to find BCycle stations
Mobility hubs (Bus shelter and BCycle station):

  • 30th Street and Carpenter Avenue (Drake neighborhood, Route 5)
  • 24th Street and University Avenue (Drake neighborhood, Routes 3 and 60)
  • 19th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue (near Smokey Row Coffee Co., Route 14)
  • SW 9th Street (Cityville funded by Hubbell Realty, Route 7)
  • 17th Street (near Meredith Corporation, Routes 11, 60 and D-Line)
  • Ingersoll Avenue and 23rd Street (Routes 11 and 60), opening late summer/fall 2017

BCycle station (no bus shelter):

  • Forest Avenue and 27th Street (Drake neighborhood)
  • 33rd Street and Forest Avenue (Drake neighborhood)
  • 3rd Street and Market Street (Science Center of Iowa)

Drake is proud to be a leader in offering alternative transportation solutions for students, faculty, and staff. In addition to BCycle, Drake also has a Bike Library, in which faculty, staff, and students can check out a bike for free. The Bike Library is located in the Olmsted Center. The check-out process is easy. Users need to bring their Drake Card and sign a liability wavier, and then they are on their way.

And as always, faculty, staff, and students can ride DART busses for free with a Drake Card (ID).

Students receive free admission to Drake home games

Drake undergraduate, graduate, and law students are admitted to all home Drake Athletics contests for free. Tickets will automatically be added to students’ Drake Card through Flash Seats. Drake Athletics has partnered with Flash Seats to help give students a convenient way to attend athletic events.

Students will receive a confirmation email from Flash Seats that their tickets have arrived on Thursday, Aug. 31. Once they receive the confirmation, they can head to the game and cheer on the Bulldogs. If a student does not receive an email from Flash Seats, visit or contact the Drake Athletics Ticket Office at 515-271-3647 or tickets@drake.edu.
