SJMC students win national honors

Two Drake public relations seniors were recognized at the recent PR News annual awards luncheon in Washington, D.C.

Maddy Gildersleeve was named PR News Student of the Year. The award recognizes “an outstanding student who has demonstrated leadership, talent and passion” for public relations and communications.

Sarah Mondello received honorable mention for PR News Intern of the Year for her work with Drake Community Press. The award recognizes a student who “established herself or himself quickly as a self-starting member and idea generator for a communications team and exhibited strong writing skills, professional demeanor [and] smart use of digital tactics.”

Martin Roth publishes book on Neurolaw

Martin Roth, Drake professor of philosophy, will release his book, Philosophical Foundations of Neurolaw, this month. It is a scholarly monograph published by Lexington Books. Neurolaw is a rapidly growing field that addresses several important issues at the intersection of neuroscience, law, and philosophy. The book addresses a number of public policy matters, such as criminal law, and showcases cross-disciplinary research.

Students to discuss legislative research with community members

Who says you can’t talk about politics? After intensive analysis, study, and preparation, students in the sociology course Race and Ethnic Relations will host the class’ second annual Present and Defend, a discussion in which groups of Drake students will share findings about state legislative proposals with the Des Moines metro community.

Tomorrow, Dec. 13, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. in Meredith Hall, Rooms 102 and 103, the class will meet with Iowans interested in racial equity in state policy. RaySociety participants, a middle school church group, and key equity advocates will come to dialogue with Drake students. Topics include employment certification for re-entering prisoners, a public safety initiative to issue drivers licenses to immigrant Iowans, restoration of felon voting rights, and ending racial profiling.

The course was taught by Darcie Vandegrift, and the event is funded by the sociology program in the Department for the Study of Culture and Society.

Join Weight Watchers at Work

Now is the perfect time to get into the habit of making healthier choices. If your goals include losing weight, Weight Watchers at Work may be the solution.

Weight Watchers at Work offers weekly, 30-minute meetings, including a confidential weigh-in prior to the meeting. The program’s mix of face-to-face interaction with a trained leader, group support, accountability, digital tools, and the convenience of meeting in the workplace have helped faculty and staff to be successful in their weight loss goals.

The program costs $156 for a 12-week renewable series with a minimum of 15 participants. Payment may be made in a lump sum or split into three payments. If you are interested in joining Weight Watchers at Work, beginning in January, please contact Linda Feiden at linda.feiden@drake.edu.

Holiday check schedule

Winter break check processing schedule:

  • All check requests are due to Accounts Payable by the end of the business day on Friday, Dec. 15.
  • For requests received by Dec. 15, checks will be processed and available after 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19. This will be the last check run before winter break.
  • The accounting office will be closed during winter break. Normal check processing will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

Building access during winter break

Following graduation on Dec. 16 and through Dec. 21, most campus buildings will adopt administrative hours. This means buildings will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

Starting Dec. 22, doors will be locked for the winter break. Faculty and staff will still be able to utilize their authorized access plans and enter their office buildings 24/7. Student plans will be shut off during this time. Regular building hours will resume on Jan. 3, the start of January Term.

Cowles Library open hours/after-hours are listed on their website.

Faculty and staff holiday cheer event

All Staff Council and Human Resources invite faculty and staff to attend its Holiday Cheer gathering on Thursday, Dec. 14, near the Pomerantz stage in the Olmsted Center. Faculty and staff are welcome to come and go as they please from 9 to 11 a.m.

Guests can enjoy a hot chocolate bar, cookie decorating station, music, and drawings for prizes. Griff will also be in attendance. To be eligible for prize drawings, please bring at least one non-perishable item that will go to the Drake Food Pantries on campus.

Holiday Cheer will replace the holiday breakfast previously hosted by Human Resources. The event is a chance to give back to others in the Drake community, while mingling with coworkers.

Don’t wait to use your FY18 technology funds

With the launch of our IT Service Portal, ITS changed the way that computer orders are submitted. As you review your FY18 budget, here’s a reminder on how to submit computer orders, as well as where to find information about the overall ITS purchasing process.

Computer and other technology orders must be submitted no later than April 30, 2018, though we encourage you to make your technology purchases earlier in the year whenever possible. Our computer vendors have a higher volume of orders in the spring, which often results in backorders and other delays. Additionally, ITS technicians begin to focus on projects after the end of the spring semester. To expense your computer orders in FY18, the product must be received before June 30, 2018.
