Nominations open for the Adams Leadership Awards

The Adams Leadership Convocation is an annual, campus-wide event that celebrates the achievements of student leaders and organizations at Drake University. Each spring we honor students and organizations who have made valuable contributions to the campus community through their outstanding commitment to leadership.

This year’s Adams Leadership Awards nomination form has opened early in an effort to nominate students and student organizations throughout the spring semester.

Please see this full list of award categories and criteria and consider nominating Drake students and student organizations who’ve exhibited strong leadership and excellence throughout the 2020–2021 academic year using the link below. Nominations can be submitted by any Drake student, faculty, and/or staff any time between now and Sunday, April 4, 2021.

Face coverings policy revision: Gaiters and bandannas

Drake’s face coverings policy and return-to-work policy previously defined face coverings to include cloth or disposable surgical masks that cover an individual’s nose and mouth. Recent reports indicate that gaiter- and bandanna-style masks are much less effective at preventing transmission of the new strains of the coronavirus impacting many areas of the country.  In response to this new information, Drake has revised its face covering policy and return to work policy such that gaiters and bandannas will no longer meet the face covering requirements for our campus.  Questions, comments or concerns about this policy change should be directed to dupolicies@drake.edu.

Drake Dining updates

Faculty and staff can order carryout from the Hubb
We’re excited to announce that faculty and staff are welcome to take away carryout meals from The Hubb beginning Monday, Feb. 1. We will continue to evaluate our operation throughout the semester to determine when faculty and staff will be able to resume dining on site. In the meantime, we will continue to honor the loyalty punch card; however, we will not resume the $5 Wednesday lunches at this time.

Commuter meal plans
Off campus students: If you need a meal plan for Spring 2021, they are available now! If you would like to sign up for a commuter meal plan, start by logging into myDrake and clicking on the Fork & Knife icon, to access the Housing & Meal Plan Selection Portal.  From here, click on the “Apply Here” at the top of the screen, then click on the “Commuter Application” for the semester in which you wish to have a commuter meal plan.

Be Unstoppable career conference

Drake’s first career conference, Be Unstoppable, will be held virtually Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature renowned speakers from around the country. With the focus on leading students to be flexible and fearless, the conference is relevant for all majors, first-year students to grad students. Register here.

Levitt Mentor and Teacher of the Year awards

You are invited to nominate a faculty or staff member for the 2020–2021 Levitt Mentor of the Year award and/or the Levitt Teacher of the Year award.

A nominee must be a faculty or staff member in at least her/his fourth academic year of service and cannot have won this award within the past five years.

The letter should be sent as an attachment to Associate Provost Arthur Sanders at arthur.sanders@drake.edu and sandra.harris@drake.edu no later than Feb. 8, 2021.

Be sure you’re logged into eduroam with your Drake email

Although we’ve always encouraged logging into our eduroam campus wireless network using your Drake email address, it wasn’t required. This changed on Dec. 1, 2020. You must now use your Drake email address to log into the eduroam network. This network setting was changed to better maintain our network and ensure credentials are passed properly to access eduroam at other affiliated institutions.

In October, we sent emails to everyone who was logging into eduroam using their Drake ID. If you received this email and haven’t made this change, you’ll first need to forget the eduroam network on any device where you are connected. See Forgetting a Wireless Network (How-To). Once that is done, please connect to eduroam again and log in using your Drake email address.

Need a reminder on how to log into eduroam? Follow the instructions at Connecting to the eduroam Wireless Network (How-to).

If you have been working, learning, or teaching entirely remotely, you’ll need to make this change when you return to the Drake campus.

New Panopto app available

Panopto has released a completely updated version of its mobile app for Android and iOS devices. This replaces the existing app that you may already have downloaded.
 
The new version is available for free download from either the Apple App Store or Google Play.

In Memoriam: Curt Cardwell

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Curt Cardwell, associate professor of History. Curt passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Jan. 7, at his home in Des Moines. Curt was a valued, dedicated, and talented member of the Drake community who will be deeply missed by his students and colleagues.

A service is being planned for late spring 2021 at the Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa. Friends and family interested in honoring Curt’s memory can make donations to the Drake University History Department (https://alumni.drake.edu/giveonline), Des Moines Mutual Aid (Venmo @DesMoines-MutualAid), or the charity of their choice.

Curt is survived by his wife Stephanie Cardwell, program coordinator of the Buchanan Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership in the College of Business and Public Administration, and their daughter, Lenin, who graduated last spring from Drake. 

You can read Curt’s obituary here. Drake community members wishing to express their sympathies can send cards addressed to the Cardwell Family through Karen MacKinnon, Meredith Hall, 2507 University Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50311, and the history department will ensure they are delivered.
