Give a shout-out to a deserving colleague

Giving a shout-out is a great way to recognize your colleagues for their hard work, talent, support, and creativity during a very challenging year, and it can simply brighten their day.

As part of Staff Appreciation Month, Human Resources is encouraging every staff member to submit a shout-out (formerly called Spotlight Stories) for a fellow colleague. Simply post a message on Twitter and Instagram using #DrakeBulldogs or submit a sentence of appreciation to Linda Feiden at linda.feiden@drake.edu.

Shout-outs will be compiled and shared in OnCampus at the end of the month as well as on the University’s social media pages. Giving a shout-out is quick and easy—simply write a sentence or two thanking a co-worker or team for a job well-done, going the extra mile, or showing support during an ever-changing year.

To help you get started, here are a few shout-outs I would like to give:

  • Facilities Planning and Management team: Thank you for the wonderful job you have done this past year maintaining our campus and buildings during the pandemic. We appreciate everything you do!
  • All Staff Council:  Thank you for your hard work this past year finding ways to support staff both on campus and remotely.  From coordinating water cooler events to organizing the Called to be True Blue program, you are the best!

As an added bonus, everyone who sends in a shout-out will be placed in a drawing for a chance to win prizes.

Please take a few minutes to post or send in a shout-out to show your gratitude for our amazing colleagues!

Apply for stipends for adopting Open Educational Resources instead of expensive textbooks

The Iowa Department of Education Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund has awarded Cowles Library and other members of the Iowa Private Academic Libraries (IPAL) consortium a $254,650 grant to support open education resource (OER) initiatives at private colleges and universities across the state of Iowa.

As a qualifying IPAL member, Drake University can apply for funds from this grant. The grant is structured to award projects ranging from OER adoption ($500 stipend) to creation of new OER (stipend up to $10,000), with options in between for adaptation of OER, creation of support materials, and course redesign. Collaborative proposals are welcome, and partnering with faculty at other Iowa colleges is encouraged but not required.

Choosing OER for course materials can save students significant amounts of money and ensure that all students have the learning resources needed for success in the class. Drake librarians are available for consultation to help you find OER for your courses.

For more information, and to note your interest, see https://researchguides.drake.edu/OER/grant2021.

Celebrate and recognize fellow Bulldogs during All In

The annual All In 24-Hour Giving Challenge is about more than just giving donations. It’s about giving recognition and celebrating our Drake community. This year, we want to acknowledge all we’ve faced together and elevate the moments of triumph, perseverance, kindness, transformation, and strength that you’ve seen in other Bulldogs through a video project. If you have someone you’d like to recognize, please sign up here to record a 15–20 second video message. (The process is easy and can be done from wherever. The All In team will provide instructions once you sign up.)

Here are some examples to get you thinking of moments you can recognize:

  • Classmate, I’m so inspired by how much you’ve done for the neighborhood by volunteering. It’s great to be in a community with such passionate people who want to make a difference.
  • Professor, you opened my mind to a career I never thought possible. Thank you for believing in me.
  • Friend, we celebrated when you nabbed that internship and then we celebrated again when the company offered you a job after graduation.
  • Friend, when I faced a family challenge, you helped me get through the fall semester. I wouldn’t have stayed on track to graduate without you.
  • Teammate, when we went all remote last spring, your daily texts and posts kept me feeling connected and hopeful. Thank you for always being there to talk, I’m so happy to be playing together again.
  • Colleague, we saw a lot of changes and challenges this year. Your grace through it all has been nothing short of inspiring. Thank you for always going the extra mile.

These video messages will be shared with the Drake audience on social media during the All In 24-Hour Giving Challenge (April 8–9). The deadline to submit a video is March 23.

Thank you for helping us recognize the Bulldogs who have risen to meet the moment. We look forward to celebrating with our community during All In. (RSVP to All In to stay up-to-date).

Please reach out to Alicia Chilton, assistant director of marketing, alicia.chilton@drake.edu, with any questions.
