Diversity Fellowship Program Description
Drake University is offering three interdisciplinary fellowships that will significantly contribute to the diversity of our community. Drake broadly defines diversity to include race, ethnicity, gender, military veteran, socioeconomic status, disability, or LGBT status. Fellows will teach two courses each semester, advance their scholarly or creative work, and participate in the academic and intellectual communities of the units with which they are affiliated and across Drake University.

Fellows receive an annual stipend of $40,000, a $2,000 annual research/travel allowance, and a $1,000 one-time moving allowance. The fellowship is a one-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal for up to three years. Successful participation in the program may lead to a tenure-track appointment at Drake. Schedule Your Biometric Screening Today

On campus screenings have started. If you are on Drake’s health plan, you must complete a biometric screening annually to retain your wellness premium discount, which is a savings of approximately $300.

Use the online registration form to schedule your appointment today. There are limited spots available and some screening dates are already full. To access the screening schedule, log in with the username DRAKE and password SCREEN (in all caps). The screenings will be held between 6:30 and 10:30 a.m. in the lower level of the Olmsted Center on Oct. 2, 4, 5, 10-12, 16, and 17.

If you registered for an on-campus screening but don’t remember your appointment date and time, check your received, spam, or deleted email folders for an email confirmation from UnityPoint with the subject: Health Screen Confirmation. It would have been delivered to the email address you entered on your registration. Questions regarding the on-campus UnityPoint screenings should be sent to unitypointhealth.desmoines@gmail.com.

If you need to cancel an on-campus screening, send an email to jennifer.umphfleet@unitypoint.org with your name, date, and time of appointment you wish to cancel. You will need to re-register online for a new appointment. Changes can be made up to 48 hours prior to the appointment, if slots are still available.

For those who completed their screening by Sept. 30, we will announce our early bird prize winners in next week’s OnCampus. For questions, contact Linda Feiden at linda.feiden@drake.edu or 271-1880.

Join the Healthiest State Walk

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to join this year’s Healthiest State Walk on Wednesday, Oct. 3. This walk is part of the Healthiest State Initiative and its goal of making Iowa the healthiest state in the nation.

The walk will begin at the north entrance of the Olmsted Center at 12 p.m. and follow a path around Drake’s campus. Fruit infuser bottles and Grand Blue Mile tech shirts will be handed out, as supplies last, to faculty, staff, and students.

This year we are combining efforts with Sodexo’s Mindful Mile program. Lucas Flaherty, Sodexo campus dietitian, will be on hand to provide handouts, a few snacks, infused water, and more. If it rains, the walk will take place at the indoor track in the Knapp Center.

It takes approximately 15 minutes to walk a mile, so consider taking a few minutes away from work or studies to participate in this fun and healthy event. For more information, email Linda Feiden at linda.feiden@drake.edu.

Attend this session, presented by Dr. Rachel Dykstra Boon, Chief Academic Officer at the Board of Regents, to increase your awareness of some of the Hot Topics that institutions, such as Drake University, are addressing. This 1.5 hour session will be on Wednesday, October 10, starting at 1:00 p.m. in Olmsted 310.  Register online.

October is National Work and Family Month.

First nationally designated in 2003 by the U.S. Congress, National Work and Family Month is designed to communicate and celebrate progress towards supporting work-life effectiveness programs. These programs help each one of us to work towards success at work and at home. Throughout the month Human Resources will highlight several policies and benefits that are available to support you and your family.

Family and Medical Leave provides eligible employees with job protected unpaid leave to help balance work and family responsibilities by allowing them to take reasonable leave for certain family and medical reasons. Some reasons include: the birth and care of the newborn child of an employee; for placement with the employee of a child for adoption or foster care; to care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition; and to take medical leave when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health condition. Additional reasons for Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) are identified in Drake University’s Family and Medical Leave Policy.

When the employee experiences a health condition, the Faculty Short Term Disability Policy and Staff Sick Leave become more relevant. The Faculty Short Term Disability Policy provides pay continuation for eligible faculty when illness or injury prevent them from working. Staff Sick Leave is accrued and is available for when an employee’s health condition prevents him or her from working. Additionally, this sick leave may be used for personal or immediate family illness, when the employee is needed to provide care.

New parents have additional benefits available to assist with new family responsibilities. Paid Parental Leave is available to qualifying parents to care for a newborn child or placement of a child under 18 for purposes of adoption or foster care. Modified Duties for Faculty Upon Becoming a Parent provides eligible faculty with a workload reduction upon the birth or adoption of a child. The Paid Parental Leave and Modified Duties are available to both parents, on the first of the month following their employment at Drake.

As life events occur, non-tenured faculty members, in tenure track positions, may be eligible for a one-year extension of the tenure probationary period through the Tenure Clock Extension Policy. Reasons for the extension include, but are not limited to,  the birth of a child into the faculty member’s household, the adoption or fostering of a child under the age of five into the faculty member’s household, and to assist the faculty member who has suffered a serious health condition. Specific details, life event information, and information about how to initiate this extension are located within the Tenure Clock Extension Policy.

All of these policies are found in the University Policy Library, in the Human Resources section. Please contact Debra Wiley in Human Resources, either via phone at 271-3741 or email at debra.wiley@drake.edu with your questions or for additional information.
