Students: Volunteer with Meals from the Heartland

Exploring Food Justice and Community Building through Service
Friday, Oct. 30
5:15—7:30 p.m.
Marriott Hotel – Salon D & E

Meals from the Heartland is a nonprofit, largely volunteer-based organization that brings diverse communities—such as businesses, schools, individuals, organizations, churches, and families—together in an effort to provide food to the hungry around the world. They’ve packaged more than 50 million meals since they began in 2007. Join us in this hands-on experience to package meals for the hungry, and learn more about global service-learning. This event will also include light hors d’oeuvres.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about Meals from the Heartland and food justice/food security
  • Send meals all over the world; will pack about 20,000 meals
  • Learn more about global service-learning from a practitioner in the field of international education
  • Opportunity to network with international educators in the Midwest

Please RSVP to Maria Rohach, global learning program coordinator, by Wednesday, Oct. 28, at maria.rohach@drake.edu.

Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos)

Dia de los Muertos—The Day of the Dead—is a lively holiday celebrated in Latin America in honor of the deceased. This year, Professor Eduardo González of Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, Guadalajara, will offer a talk entitled La Migración y el Culto a la Santa Muerte: Asirse a lo que Sea (“Migration and the Cult of Santa Muerte: Hanging onto Whatever”). Professor González’s talk will take place Thursday, Oct. 29, 7 p.m. in Sussman Theater.

This event is part of The Comparison Project. The “cult of Santa Muerte” (Saint Death) is the fastest growing and most prominent religious movement in Mexico today. Professor González’s lecture explores the worship of Santa Muerte in the city of Guadalajara, focusing both on the general ways in which the church of Santa Muerte offers “a place for everyone” and on the specific ways in which Santa Muerte serves the needs of migrants attempting the crossing to the United States.

Eduardo González Velázquez is a research professor at Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education. He won the Jalisco Journalism Award in 2009 and 2007 in the categories of reporting and writing respectively. He has published 30 articles and book chapters, including “Ciudadanos a la Mitad.” His current area of research is US–Mexico migration.

Office of Residence Life moves to online housing registration

The Office of Residence Life is proud to announce that through a strong partnership with Drake Technology Services, we have migrated the paper-based, entering first-year student housing registration process to an online application available as of Oct. 1. The online process will make the housing and dining service application experience easier for the students and families preparing to start their journey at Drake, as well as enhance the roommate matching process.

We could not have accomplished this task without the hard work of the Drake Technology Services staff, who completed the project on time and on budget for the incoming first-year students.

Foreign language conversation hours

It is difficult to keep up language fluency without speaking regularly, so Drake’s Department of World Languages and Cultures wants to help.

Arabic Club

Arabic Club offers the opportunity for students, faculty, and administrators to practice speaking in Arabic on Wednesdays in Medbury, Room 219 between 1:15 and 3:15 p.m. All levels of speakers are welcome. In addition to practicing speaking, the group explores history, geography, culture, and other topics of interest to the group. Drop-in attendance is welcome.

For further information, contact Adjunct Instructor Nahed Waly, nahed.waly@drake.edu.

Spanish Conversation Hours

Spanish Conversation Hours are scheduled for Mondays 2–3 p.m., and Thursdays 12:30–1:30 p.m. in Meredith, Room 228. Students, faculty, and administrators of all levels are welcome. The group is very encouraging of all participants and no long-term commitment is required to attend. A native speaker facilitates the conversation for those interested in practicing Spanish in an informal setting.

For further information, contact Visiting Assistant Professor Inbal Mazar at inbal.mazar@drake.edu
