Drake launches revamped M.B.A.

The CBPA is launching a significantly enhanced Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program designed to better meet the needs of today’s working students.

Beginning this fall, classes within the M.B.A. program will be offered in a hybrid model—the only one of its kind in central Iowa—that blends the convenience of online coursework with the benefits of intensive classroom experience. About half of course time will be completed online, with the other half completed on Drake’s campus.
Students in Drake’s hybrid M.B.A. program have the opportunity to:

  • Apply business analytics to become a strategic leader
  • Acquire and hone sought-after project management skills
  • Connect with Des Moines business leaders as a core part of the learning experience
  • Customize their M.B.A. with a specialization that fits their career interests
  • Develop leadership skills in courses focused on expanding business acumen

Director of Sponsored Programs
As you will remember, last fall Jayne Smith resigned her position as director of sponsored programs. Since that time we have conducted a national search for a new director. I am delighted to announce that Mary Wohlford will be the new director of the Office of Sponsored Programs. She has 31 years of experience in higher education administration, and comes to Drake from The Registry, the nation’s premier interim higher education executive search firm. Her most recent assignment for them was as associate vice provost at Suffolk University where, among other things, she worked to rapidly develop extramural funding plans in each of the university’s three colleges and across the institution, dramatically increasing proposal development from $2 million per year to $35 million per year.

She has extensive experience in grants management and sponsored programs in a variety of universities, including Suffolk, Albany State University, Kansas City University, and Des Moines University. She has been a faculty member in health science related fields at Kansas City University; Des Moines University, where she was a tenured associate professor in health administration and public health; and Indian Hills Community College. She has a B.S. in health information management from Stephens College, an M.S. in health care administration from Des Moines University, an M.A. in industrial design and technology from the University of Iowa, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from Iowa State University. Mary will assume her responsibilities at Drake on July 1. I want to thank Art Sanders and the members of the search committee for their good work in concluding a successful search.

Provost Mobile Office Hour
You can find me this week on Tuesday, April 19, 9:30-10:30 a.m., in the Cowles coffee shop. No appointments needed.

SJMC news: Week of April 18

Drake magazine program featured prominently in MediaShift article

SJMC magazine professor Jeff Inman was featured prominently in an article on Mediashift, a website that bills itself as the “premier destination for insight and analysis at the intersection of media and technology.”  The article, titled “Teaching Magazine Students More Than Magazines,”  examines the changing nature of magazine journalism education and the challenges facing teachers attempting to replicate the breakneck nature of online journalism in the classroom.

Senior journalism website features musical mashup

The latest edition of Urban Plains (http://urban-plains.com/)—the award-winning multimedia website produced by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s magazine, news, and digital media production students—has been live for several weeks and is being continually updated. A fun feature of this year’s Urban Plains: Urban Mash Up, in which local musicians from diverse backgrounds (jazz, classical, dixieland, rock, folk) are invited into the Turner Jazz Center and left to experiment for an hour. Their musical collaboration is then recorded.

Created by Archives Assistant Katherine Lincoln and Drake senior Cecilia Panella, the exhibit is in the Collier Room on the 2nd floor of Cowles Library. Along with reproductions, the exhibit also includes original documents and historical photographs. The president’s mace and medallion will also be on display just outside of Archives & Special Collections on the 2nd floor.
