New ITS email security protections

ITS is adopting a new tool to expand security protections for Drake’s email system in order to decrease the potential of phishing attacks against faculty, staff, and students.

This tool protects your online identity and Drake’s electronic assets by:

  • Scanning incoming emails from external (non-Drake.edu) addresses to identify potentially malicious emails and alerting administrators to possible incoming attacks
  • Blocking access to known malicious links and attachments from incoming emails

Past attacks directed at Drake have led to destructive software being installed and email accounts being placed at risk. This tool is designed to significantly decrease risk, and we anticipate the number of suspicious or potentially malicious emails reaching Drake inboxes to significantly decrease.

Please contact the ITS Support Center at ext. 3001 with any questions or concerns.

Managed printing update

New printers and copiers will be installed across campus between June 14 and July 29. All departments have now received information on the devices being ordered for their area, including technical specifications and an expected delivery time. Due to the large scope of this project, we’ve created a Managed Printing channel on the blueView home tab, to serve as an information hub. As new materials are created, they will be linked there. Additionally, there continue to be regular updates about managed printing on the ITS Major Projects page.

Drake announces new executive director, facilities planning and management

On June 13, 2016 Kevin Moran will join Drake as executive director, facilities planning and management. Kevin will lead key changes to facilities operations in light of Drake’s decision to terminate its third-party facilities management contract effective July 1. Kevin was previously employed by the City of Des Moines, where he held a variety of positions—each with expanding responsibilities and accomplishments—over a 15-year period. Most recently, he served on a leadership team within the Parks and Recreation Department as senior park planner/properties administrator, where he developed, managed, and implemented capital improvement plans for city parks, trails, community centers, entertainment facilities, and pools. Kevin brings to the position skills and experience in budgeting, design, planning, construction, project management, and leadership.

Kevin received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Iowa State University. In 2005, he successfully completed the Drake Certified Public Manager program. Kevin is a registered landscape architect and certified Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) coordinator.

Please join us in welcoming Kevin to the Drake community.

Campus climate update

Work is continuing on several action steps outlined in the recommendations provided by the Strategic Diversity Action Team (SDAT) in March. About 220 Drake students, faculty, and staff provided input on the diversity and inclusion statement; their feedback was taken into account and SDAT leaders met with the President’s Council to discuss the statement. After some delays with hectic end-of-semester activities, we hope to have the statement adopted by mid-June. Thanks to all who have participated in the process to this point; we are certainly proving that together, we make Drake stronger.

CPHS D-PREP summer program for high school students

You are invited to nominate students for the Drake College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences D-PREP program!

D-PREP is a program that introduces students to careers in the health care professions by educating them about opportunities in health sciences and inspiring them to explore different pathways. Students participate in hands-on laboratory experiences, educational sessions, and interactive discussions with students and faculty in the CPHS to understand how to best prepare for a career in health care. Special emphasis is placed on promoting cultural competence and diversity in health care and among health professionals. The overarching goal of this program is to expose students to a wide variety of opportunities within health care and educate them about how they can best prepare for a career in the health professions.

Program Goals:

  • Students will learn about careers in the health care professions.
  • Students will learn about promoting cultural competence and diversity in health care and among health professionals.
  • Students will learn about the importance of practical lab experiences and begin to develop laboratory skills.
  • Students will investigate the role of health care professionals to gain a better understanding of patient-provider relationships through skill-building exercises.
  • Students will be able to plan their remaining high school curriculum and extracurricular activities to prepare for a career in health care.

This summer we will host an overnight event for students who are interested in learning more about careers in health care and what they can do with a degree in the sciences. This event will take place on Thursday, July 14–Friday, July 15 on campus and will include a number of activities that will help students learn about preparing for a career in the health professions. Our sessions will include:

  • Career options in health care
  • Promoting cultural competence and diversity in health care
  • Lab activities in pharmacy and health sciences
  • Interaction with current pharmacy and health sciences students and faculty
  • College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences programs at Drake
  • Preparing for college admission
  • Staying overnight in an on-campus residence hall
  • Meals on campus

Students must meet the following requirements in order to participate:

  • Must be enrolled as a 10th, 11th, or 12th grader during the 2016–2017 academic year
  • Have an interest in careers in health care, math, and/or science fields

Due to the costs involved in providing an overnight experience on campus, there is an $80 fee for participating in the D-PREP program. All students that meet the eligibility criteria above are welcome to apply. Scholarships may be available to students from traditionally underrepresented groups within the health care professions.

If you know any high school students who are interested in a career in the health professions, please nominate them using the our nomination form. Students will be notified of your nomination via email, at which time we will send them a link to complete our online application. Student applications are due by Wednesday, June 1. Students will be notified of their acceptance into the program via email by Wednesday, June 15.
