SoTL lunch discussion Dec. 8

The semester’s final Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) lunch is Friday, Dec. 8, at 12 p.m. in Olmsted Center, TMR 133. These discussions are opportunities for those engaged in SoTL projects at any level—from just thinking about starting one, to almost complete, or those simply curious about SoTL—to share ideas, seek advice, or ask questions of colleagues engaged in the process. This year, members of ITS will attend to provide information about SoTL projects that might involve technology usage. Please register by Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 10 a.m. to be provided a lunch.

FYS lunch discussion Dec. 1

The final Friday FYS lunch/discussion is Dec. 1 at 12 p.m. in Olmsted Center, TMR 133. The event is open to both current and prospective FYS instructors. If you have an interest in teaching FYS in the future, or are curious to learn more about teaching FYS sections, you are welcome to attend. While it is too late to order a lunch, you are welcome to attend and bring your own.

Hy-Vee Classic: Faculty/Staff tickets available

A limited number of $75, lower bowl, 100-level tickets to the Hy-Vee Classic are available for Drake faculty and staff to purchase. This college basketball event on Saturday, Dec. 16, brings together the four Division I men’s basketball programs in the state of Iowa. The Drake men’s basketball team will take on the University of Iowa at 1 p.m. followed by the Iowa State–Northern Iowa game at 3:30 p.m. Seats within Drake’s designated sections can be purchased, while supplies last, at The Knapp Center Ticket Office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are valid to both games of the event.

A pregame event, hosted by the Drake Alumni Association, will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall in the Community Choice Credit Union on the day of the game. Faculty and staff are invited to attend the pregame.

Campus OneDrive project update

ITS continues to make progress with the release of a cloud storage solution to campus. OneDrive has been rolled out to several administrative units across campus, with more scheduled to be complete before winter break. As previously mentioned, a phased approach is being taken for the release of OneDrive to ensure adequate technical support is available to faculty and staff as they get familiar with this new platform for document storage. Implementation will continue through the end of the fiscal year. A full schedule for the OneDrive project is available on the ITS website.

In order to prepare for the launch of OneDrive, ITS staff pushed the OneDrive client to all Drake-owned Mac computers on Nov. 10. The client will be pushed to Drake-owned Windows computers soon. There is no need to do anything with the OneDrive software at this time. ITS staff will continue to work directly with departments across campus to provide additional instructions and training as the OneDrive roll out continues throughout the rest of this fiscal year.

Faculty and staff holiday cheer event

All Staff Council and Human Resources invite faculty and staff to attend its Holiday Cheer gathering on Thursday, Dec. 14, near the Pomerantz stage in the Olmsted Center. Faculty and staff are welcome to come and go as they please from 9 to 11 a.m.

Guests can enjoy a hot chocolate bar, cookie decorating station, music, and drawings for prizes. Griff will also be in attendance. To be eligible for prize drawings, please bring at least one non-perishable item that will go to the Drake Food Pantries on campus.

Holiday Cheer will replace the holiday breakfast previously hosted by Human Resources. The event is a chance to give back to others in the Drake community, while mingling with coworkers.

Drake social and budget presentation

Faculty and staff are invited to the Shivers Hospitality Suite, adjacent to The Knapp Center, for a social hosted by the provost on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 4 p.m. CFO Teresa Krejci will present information on the University’s budget. Snacks, soft drinks, beer, and wine will be served. Be sure to attend to learn about the budget and enjoy the company of friends and colleagues.

Banner 9 project update

A cross-departmental project team has been formed to upgrade Banner, Drake’s campus-wide computer information system that manages student, faculty, staff, and financial information. The project team is comprised of representatives from key campus departments, including finance, financial planning, human resources, ITS, and the registrar’s office. The project team is tasked with completing the migration of DUSIS to Banner 9 by Dec. 31, 2018 when the current version (Banner 8) will no longer be supported.

The project’s initial focus is on Internet Native Banner (DUSIS). Changes to MyDUSIS tools, such as self-registration and time sheets, will be a multi-year project. Planning will begin in spring 2018. More information about the schedule for the MyDUSIS upgrade will be shared at that time.

Although this is a major change behind the scenes, the upgrade to Banner 9 is more of a facelift for campus users that offers a more current web browser look, feel, and navigation experience. As part of this rollout, the project team will coordinate training for all current Banner 8 users to ensure a smooth transition to the new version.

Students perform Drake waste audit

Members of the Drake Environmental Action League (DEAL) audited Drake’s trash, recycle, and compost waste earlier this month. Facilities Planning and Management assisted with the initiative by transporting trash and recycle dumpsters from Old Main, Opperman/Cartwright, Goodwin-Kirk Residence Hall, and Hubbell Dining to its warehouse so the audit could be performed. These dumpsters were chosen to provide an accurate representation of waste among our campus buildings.

Facilities Planning and Management is grateful for the students in DEAL who worked hard on a Sunday and then shared insights on what is working and what can be improved. As a result of the audit, a pilot recycling program will be implemented at Goodwin-Kirk Residence Hall. Multiple, centralized recycle collection points will be placed on each floor, making it easy and convenient for those in the building to recycle. The program is designed to increase recycling and reduce waste in large campus buildings, such as Goodwin-Kirk.

In the last 10 years, Drake has reduced the amount of waste it sends to the landfill by approximately 400 tons. This reduction has been achieved by recycling more than 150 tons, and composting nearly 100 tons of yard waste and approximately 35 tons of food waste last year alone.

Retirement party for Gloria Lawless

Please join us in celebrating Gloria Lawless’ retirement from Drake on Monday, Dec. 11, between 1 and 4 p.m. at the Student Life Center, Olmsted Center. Gloria, better known as Glo, has served Drake students, faculty, and staff for almost 30 years. Gloria’s commitment to teamwork, communication, and service has made a huge impact on the Drake community. She will be dearly missed. Stop by the Student Life Center on Dec. 11 for coffee, treats, and to congratulate Glo.
