2017 wellness screening and assessment information

Thank you to everyone who participated in last year’s Wellness Incentive Program. It was a great success and we will be offering the same program again in 2017 (to receive the incentive in 2018).
What is the Wellness Incentive Program? Those on Drake’s health plan can save approximately $300 in 2018 by completing a biometrics screening and online wellness assessment this year.

There are three biometric screening options:

  • Complete a screening with your physician and fill out a Physician Wellness Screening Results Form
  • Complete your screening at a participating Hy-Vee location
  • Complete your screening on campus through UnityPoint Health

The Hy-Vee option is available July 1 through Sept. 15, and the on-campus dates are Oct. 4–6, 9, 11, 13, 17, and 19. But you can complete a screening with your physician now. If you have a physical in 2017—with bloodwork—between Jan. 1 and Aug. 31, the results can be submitted as your biometric screening.

  • Take a copy of the Physician Wellness Screening Results Form to your appointment.
  • Your physician must sign the completed form and fax it to 1-855-827-6307. Results will be forwarded to Wellmark.
  • The signed form must be received directly from your doctor’s office by Sept. 30, 2017.
  • It is up to you to ensure your physician’s office submits the appropriate paperwork by the Sept. 30 deadline. To determine whether your paperwork has been received, contact Wellmark on their 24/7 help line at 1-877-252-8412.

After the completion of your screening, you will also need to take the online wellness assessment. Assessments are accessible on www.wellmark.com Feb. 1 through Nov. 17, 2017.

Questions may be directed to Linda Feiden, assistant director, wellness & engagement, at linda.feiden@drake.edu or 271-1880.

Update on Fair Labor Standards Act

Following months of preparation for the new Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime regulations, the injunction issued on Nov. 22, 2016, halted implementation. This created significant uncertainty, particularly on the threshold of a new presidential administration. Drake made the decision to suspend planned changes until more was known about the outcome of the injunction and response of the new administration.

As of the writing of this communication, there has been no change in the status of the FLSA overtime rules. In the injunction lawsuit appealed to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. Department of Justice recently asked for more time so the new administration could consider the issue. The Trump administration also issued a freeze on new or pending federal regulations, with various advocacy groups debating over whether the freeze would apply to the FLSA rules made final and published before the freeze.

However, we are working to ensure we are able to respond once an outcome is known. We are analyzing various scenarios including abandonment of the new rules, modification of the new rules, or full implementation of the rules. While this rule affects how we classify job—as either exempt or non-exempt—the work over the course of the past year has also focused on ensuring positions are properly placed in Drake’s staff compensation structure consistent with the Staff Salary Guidelines. (These can be found on the HR tab of blueView under the “Manager’s /Toolkit”.) This analysis will prove useful regardless of the outcome of the proposed FLSA rule.

Anyone with questions about this process or next steps are encouraged to reach out to Gary Johnson at 271-4804.

BUILD (Bulldogs United in Learning Drake) update

Bulldogs United In Learning Drake (or BUILD) began Fall 2016, replacing the Excellence in Learning & Development program. To date, 186 faculty and staff have participated in at least one session. Each session is worth one or more credit hours. At certain credit hour levels, employees earn digital badges. A total of 17 employees earned badges during the fall semester. Fourteen employees earned a Level 1 digital badge, two earned a Level 2 digital badge, and one employee earned a Level 3 digital badge.

In addition to the digital badges, two names were randomly drawn from those who attended at least one class. The winners are Susan Dittmer and Pam Smith. Each will receive an email with a link to a catalog where they can select a prize of their choice.

All faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in sessions this semester where you may learn a new skill, improve your health, or strengthen your professional knowledge. As you participate, you will continue to earn credits toward digital badges that can be placed in your email signature to recognize your commitment to learning. And we will have another drawing at the end of the semester to give away more prizes! Registration forms for all BUILD classes are accessible through blueView’s Employee tab, in the Learning and Development Channel under Human Resources, or by clicking here.
