The Office of New Student Programs would like to invite first-generation students to attend a finals prep (and social) on Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 5–7 p.m. at Pomerantz Stage. We will have a variety of snacks and drinks (including coffee!) for students to enjoy to take a quick break from studying before finals. We will also have a few tips and tricks on how to succeed during finals week to be the most productive that you can be. Students will also have the opportunity to ask Josh Wallace, academic success and retention specialist, any questions they may have about finals or study strategies as well. Would you like to start (or ramp up) your own business while studying at Drake? Apply for the Lorentzen Student Hatchery. This program will pay you to work on your own startup/business over the 2019 summer break. Applicants selected to participate in the Hatchery will receive coaching, mentoring, educational, and networking opportunities. Plus, we have extended the deadline for applying to the Lorentzen Student Hatchery until Jan. 28, 2019, to give you extra time to work on your application and idea. Tauscheck serves on the UnityPoint Health – Des Moines Board of Directors, Bravo Greater Des Moines Board, Drake University National Alumni Board, Iowa Cultural Trust Board, Ballet Des Moines Board, Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines Marketing Committee and Co-Chairs the Marketing and Communications Advisory Board for the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives for North America.

The Greater Des Moines Partnership is the economic and community development organization that serves Greater Des Moines (DSM), Iowa.

Tauscheck was Juice Young Professional of the Year, received the Business Record’s Emerging Woman of Influence award, was Metro Women’s Network 2015 Woman of the Year, named one of the nation’s top Forty Under 40 leaders in nonprofits and associations by USAE and awarded the Drake University National Young Alumni Achievement Award in 2018.

The Harkin Institute’s student luncheons offer intimate, hour-long opportunities for Drake University students to visit with an accomplished government, nonprofit, journalism, political, or public policy leader. During this event, Tauscheck will informally discuss her career, share information, answer questions, provide advice and get to know students. Apply for the lunch.

This week, Drake International is excited to celebrate International Education Week. A feature of the week is hosting special guests from six of Drake’s international partner universities. View the calendar to see all events for the week. Some of the key events for students are listed below. We encourage students to get involved to learn more about Drake as a global university.

Nov. 13 – International Education Week Kickoff Celebration
Drake International and Drake’s International Student Association are kicking off International Education Week with samples of international food, music, and performances on Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 4:30–6:30 p.m. in the Olmsted Breezeway. Come see what is planned for the week and celebrate Drake as a global university.

Nov. 14 – Global opportunities student workshop
Want to be globally engaged at Drake, but aren’t sure of what’s available to you? Hear from a panel of faculty, staff, and students on Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 2:15–3:15 p.m. in Meredith, Room 102 who will describe academic opportunities, co-curricular experiences, research projects, student employment, grant funding, and more. Post-graduate global opportunities will also be discussed.

Nov. 14 – Crowded Out: A Story of Over Tourism
In Sussman Theater from 7:30–8:30 p.m., watch a documentary and participate in a discussion about the growing international tourism industry and its negative effects on local communities.

Nov. 15 – Student Trivia Night: International Style
On Thursday, Nov. 15, from 8–10 p.m. at Papa Keno’s, it’s pub trivia night with internationally themed rounds. Grab some friends and build a team to compete for prizes. Student winners of the photo contest will be announced.

Nov. 15 – Global Career Talks
Hear from professionals based in Des Moines who are working in an international field on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 12–1:30 p.m. in Sussman Theatre. This a great opportunity to learn more about global professions and to also build your local networks. There will be time dedicated to sharing tips on what employers are looking for with regards to international/global experiences and interests.

Student Senate is hosting a panel discussion with current and former Drake student teachers to share their placement experiences. The event will take place Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. on Pomerantz Stage in Olmsted. Students who are beginning their student teaching experience soon or want to learn more are encouraged to come and hear from others without the pressure of having professors around.
