Mentors In Violence Prevention training

Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) is now accepting students, staff, and faculty for the spring training. Register here. You must be able to attend all three training sessions to be certified:

  • Friday, March 1, 1–4 p.m.
  • Friday, March 8, 1–4 p.m.
  • Friday, March 15, 1–4 p.m.

Looking for work? Service-Learning Ambassadors wanted

The Office of Community Engaged Learning is hiring Service-Learning Ambassadors for the 2019–2020 academic year. 

Service-Learning Ambassadors (SLAs) are students committed to working with service learning and community engagement. Each SLA focuses on a specific project, such as food recovery, Alternative Breaks, the Sprout Garden, graphic design and social media projects, and coordinating trainings and events. SLAs commit to working six to seven hours a week on their project, working to plan and organize the event/project, recruit Drake students, and perform follow-up.

The role of a Service Learning Ambassador:
— Connect Drake students to the community and recruit volunteers to fulfill community needs
— Educate the campus on meaningful service and social issues
— Engage students in reflection
— Raise awareness of community engaged learning and its impact on Drake students and the community
— Plan and organize events and opportunities to achieve these goals

Pay is $8.25 an hour. A resume, cover letter, and name of reference is due to amanda.martin@drake.edu by March 11.

Food recovery service opportunity with Next Course

Next Course is a food recovery network on campus where Drake students deliver food from Hubbell to local partner agencies in Des Moines. Recoveries are scheduled for every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Food recovery and food insecurity are complex systems that are intertwined with public health, environmental health, and the community that we live in. This opportunity allows students to engage in meaningful service. Sign up to help with a recovery.

Engaged Campus Award nominations due March 4

Do you know of a Drake student, faculty, staff, or alumni doing great work in the community? Nominate them for an Engaged Campus Award.

Nominations are due March 4. Awards will be presented at the Iowa Campus Compact Engaged Campus Awards and Summit on Monday, April 29, at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. Mandi McReynolds, director of community relations and the Foundation at Principal will be the keynote speaker. Submit a nomination.

Career Fair Thursday

The Drake University Career Fair will be held Thursday, Feb. 14, in the Olmsted Center.  You can review a list of the organizations attending by logging into Handshake and clicking on the Career Fair (under “Events”).  Don’t forget to bring copies of your resume!

Career Fair Times:
Open to only seniors and O3: 3 to 3:30 p.m.
Open to all students: 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Professional attire required. No jeans or sweatpants.

Men: Suit and tie. If you don’t own a suit, wear trousers, a button down shirt, tie or blazer/sport-coat.

Women: Suit, if you don’t own a suit, wear dress pants or skirt and a nice blouse or sweater/blazer.

If you are uncertain about what to wear or have questions about the event, please contact your designated career staff.

3D Printing and Prototyping: Thursday, Feb. 21, 3–5 p.m.
Join Brandon Hart, HartSmart Products, in the Innovation studio to learn about 3D printing and prototyping. If you have an idea for a product or item, Hart also leads Area 515’s 3D Printing Club and is a great community resource for all things 3D.

Call for Papers: 2019 Global Citizen Forum

Welcome back! Did you write a paper last term on an international topic, global citizenship, or migration issues? As previously announced, one part of the inaugural Global Citizen Forum, March 6–8, 2019, will be a morning conference to recognize and share high-quality undergraduate research related to international and global topics. 

Student research panels are scheduled for the morning of Friday, March 8. Students from any major are invited to submit papers for consideration. Once a paper is accepted, the author will be invited to present his or her paper in summary form (i.e., 12–15-minute oral presentation) on a conference panel. (Panels will be composed of presentations on related topics.) 

Papers should meet the following criteria:
– Address an international/global theme or topic.
– Include significant empirical content.
– Cite all relevant sources appropriately.
– Exceed 10 pages (double-spaced) in length.
– Meet high standards with regard to academic quality and clarity of presentation.

Interested students should email their papers to: jeffrey.kappen@drake.edu by Feb. 15 and will be notified of their acceptance by Feb. 22.

National Entrepreneurship Week events, Feb 18–21

Save the date: The Innovation Studio (124C Meredith) will be hosting several events during National Entrepreneurship Week, Feb. 18–21. Learn about large scale 3D printing and prototyping with Brandon Hart of HartSmart products. Create something on one of our vinyl cutters with Professor Chris Snider.
