Zenith Chamber Music Festival is Aug. 18–21
Zenith Chamber Music Festival is scheduled for Aug. 18-21 and features daily performances by international and local artists. The family-friendly festival, hosted by Drake University, will includes these free concerts:
- Tuesday, Aug. 18, 7:30 p.m.; Caspe Terrace, Waukee
- Wednesday, Aug. 19, 7:30 p.m.; Des Moines Art Center
- Thursday, Aug. 20, 5:30 p.m.: Des Moines Social Club
- Thursday, Aug. 20, 1 p.m.; Master Class, Sheslow Auditorium
- Friday, Aug. 21, 7:30 p.m; Sheslow Auditorium
Drake University music faculty members have worked alongside private philanthropists to bring Zenith to life in the Des Moines metro area. Featured musicians, most of whom will perform nightly, include Helen Hwaya Kim, violinist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; Anna Reider, violinist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra; Arie Schacter, violist with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra; and Lei Weng, an international piano soloist and member of the faculty at University of Northern Colorado.
Drake University faculty and other local musicians will join the visiting artists for impressive displays of artistry. The festival is designed to be accessible for fans of all ages and interests—from seasoned classical aficionados to casual listeners—and each venue promises a unique atmosphere.
The festival will also serve as an educational experience for thousands of Iowa students who perform in school musical ensembles or study an instrument at home. There will be a master class for pre-college students on Aug. 21, followed by a final concert with a combination of students and Zenith featured artists that evening.
Drake Day at the Fair is Aug. 13
Drake Day at the Iowa State Fair, long associated with its signature blue-and-white tent along Rock Island Ave., has been revamped in 2015 with a new date, location, and format. Drake Day at the Fair will be held on the opening day of the fair—Thursday, Aug. 13—with “Discover Drake” events held throughout the day at our tent along Grand Avenue. This new, high-traffic space will be Drake’s home base for organizations and events including:
- Meet-and-greet with President Earl F. “Marty” Martin, 11 a.m. to noon
- Student-athletes
- The Robert D. and Billie Ray Center, which conducts research, provides programming and training, and publishes scholarly works focusing on leadership, ethics, and civility
- The Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement, which will hold a free drawing for an Apple TV
- The RaySociety, Drake’s lifelong learning organization open to all individuals across Central Iowa
Drake will also have a booth in the Varied Industries Building every day of the fair. Volunteers are still needed to the VI Building (includes air-conditioning and complimentary food and drink)—sign up today!
National Night Out with the Drake Neighborhood Association
Join the Drake Neighborhood Association for National Night Out at Drake Park on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Enjoy pulled pork sandwiches, playing in the wading pool, and visiting with Drake’s neighbors.
Iowa Private College Week is Aug. 3–7
The big blow-up Spike in addition to more than 100 faculty, staff, and current students will welcome nearly 500 prospective students and families next week, Aug. 3–7, as part of the 17th annual Iowa Private College Week. Each day, visit programs will begin at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in Sheslow Auditorium. Students and families will enjoy music from Drake student jazz musicians, a welcome from President Martin, academic overviews that represent nine areas on campus, an admission overview, student panel, and campus tour during their visit to Drake.
“Iowa Private College Week is a true reflection of Drake’s collaborative approach between faculty, staff, and students in welcoming prospective students to campus,” says Deneen Dygert, associate director of admission. “Having nine academic sessions twice a day for a total of ninety a week is a statement about how invested the Drake community is in the recruitment of new students. It will be an exhilarating week as we execute ten visit programs and welcome approximately 500 families.”
Plan to attend the 2015 Fall Convocation
The 2015 Fall Convocation will be held this Friday, Aug. 28, at 1:30 p.m. in The Knapp Center. All staff and faculty are encouraged to attend this important event welcoming new first-year and transfer students to Drake. See faculty process, hear students speak, and witness the awarding of the inaugural Principal Financial Group Global Citizen Award.
