Campus fire drills

Drake will hold fire drills on Oct. 18, 19, 23, and 24 in compliance with the Higher Education Opportunity Act and in conjunction with National Fire Prevention month. All drills will be conducted at 10 a.m. with the exception of the residence halls, which will be conducted from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 23.

Fire alarms will be activated in all campus buildings to signal the start of the drill. When the alarm sounds:

  • Evacuate the building.
  • Buildings will be locked down and cannot be re-entered until the drill ends.
  • Remember to dress accordingly.

The fire drills will be coordinated through the Office of Public Safety (271-2222) working with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (271-3804) and Facilities Services (271-3955). Change in class registration process

Students with eligible, documented disabilities who are registered with the Student Disability Services Office under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and student-athletes will register for spring courses earlier than their peers.

What is the reason for this change?
This change is intended to provide students with certain documented disabilities additional time to acquire appropriate resources and to reduce the number of class absences due to student-athlete competition schedules. Allowing student-athletes and students with certain disabilities the option to register early is a common practice among many peer institutions.

Why do student-athletes get to register early?
Student-athletes have challenging schedules that are not as flexible as the average student. The assurance of getting classes at times that work with their practice, game, and travel schedules is an important component to their academic success, including their ability to graduate on time.

How do I know if I am eligible for early registration?
Eligible students received an email directly from the Office of the Registrar notifying them of their eligibility and the exact date and time that they can register.

I don’t qualify for early registration. How will this change affect me?
Impact to other students is expected to be minimal. We will assess the effectiveness of this policy after the first and second years of implementation and make adjustments as necessary.

Are pre-requisites and other registration restrictions waived for students who register early?
No. Courses that have registration restrictions, such as those with pre-requisites or those that are reserved for students with specific majors, minors, or concentrations, apply to all students, regardless of whether they register early or not.

How do I know when I register?
Early registration students will register on either Monday, Oct. 30, or Monday, Nov. 6, at either 7 a.m. or 7:30 a.m. Students in this group will be notified by the Office of the Registrar via email with the exact date and time that they are eligible to register. Students who do not qualify for early registration will be eligible to register between Tuesday, Oct. 31 and Friday, Nov. 3 or Tuesday, Nov. 7 and Friday, Nov. 10, based on the number of credit hours they have earned.

Early-Registration Eligible (students with certain documented disabilities and student-athletes) Not Early-Registration Eligible
Graduate students Mon, Oct 30 (morning) Mon, Oct 30 (afternoon)
Seniors, juniors, professional pharmacy students in their P1-P3 years Mon, Oct 30 Tues, Oct 31 – Fri, Nov 3
Sophomores and first-year students Mon, Nov 6 Tues, Nov 7 – Fri, Nov 10

Visit the Registrar’s website for a complete list of registration time assignments.

Social media directory audit

The Drake Social Media Directory displays the URLs for every Drake affiliated social media page. There is also a student social media directory for all student organizations. Explore the directories to see what departments and organizations have pages, follow them, and invite your friends to follow. While you’re looking around, let us know if your department page or student organization page has changed. Maybe you have a name change, you want a new cover photo, or you don’t see your URL on the directory at all. If that is the case, contact Niki Smith at niki.smith@drake.edu to provide feedback.

Construction update

The completion of the Science Connector Building and Collier-Scripps Hall this summer is an exciting and major accomplishment. Now, construction on the next phase of the project––completion of the Robert D. and Billie Ray Promenade ––is in full swing. This project will provide a welcoming and beautiful outdoor space, while also enhancing accessibility and parking.

As highlighted in OnCampus last week, next steps in the construction process include the closure of the parking lot just north of Opperman Hall and the demolition of The Point. The Opperman parking lot will close this week. It is anticipated to re-open before the end of the semester if weather and contractor schedules cooperate. The Point is scheduled to be torn down the week of Oct. 9.

Human Resources and the International Center have moved from The Point. HR is now located at 3206 University Ave., and the International Center is located at 1213 25th St. Continuing Education and Professional Development (formerly known as Extension Education) will move from 3206 University Ave. to Howard Hall today.

Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as this significant project takes shape.

ITS Banner 9 project update

The majority of administrative and personal data at Drake comes from a central application, called Banner, or more commonly known as DUSIS (Drake University Shared Information System). Banner contains student, faculty, and staff information around financial aid, human resources, and registration. It connects with most campus systems including Blackboard, Webprint, and Drake Card.

The technology that our current version of Banner is built on is being phased out. In December 2018, it will no longer be supported. Because of the central role of Banner, Drake needs to upgrade to the latest version, Banner 9, which will be a multi-year project.

A project team has been formed that includes representatives from ITS, Office of Admission, Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid, Human Resources, Business and Finance, and Institutional Research. The team is coordinating efforts with other administrative and academic areas to ensure that the upgrade goes smoothly.

Over the next year, the project team will be working behind the scenes, along with our business partner Ellucian, Banner’s parent company. During this time, the preparation work of testing, creating training plans, and technical development, will not directly affect campus. All systems that connect to Banner will continue operating normally throughout this phase of the project.

The Banner project team will update campus regularly, with targeted communications to regular Banner users. Additional communication channels are being developed to allow more transparency into the process. Watch OnCampus for further information in the coming months.

Construction update: Law School Parking Lot to close Sept. 26

Last Friday, work began to remove 27th Street from Forest to Carpenter Avenue. As a result, the Law School Parking Lot (north of Opperman Library) will be closed beginning Sept. 26. The entrance to the parking lot and the drive leading to the Opperman loading dock will closed to faculty, staff, students, and visitors. The parking lot is scheduled to reopen mid-December.
