Online learning session Oct. 25

The third session in our series on Online Learning is Thursday, Oct. 25, in the Drake Room in Olmsted from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The topic is Building Presence. These sessions are not meant to be “nuts and bolts” how-to sessions, but rather discussions of the issues related to the topic. You do not need to have experience teaching online to attend, nor do you have to have attended the previous session. There is no need to register.

Iowa Civic Action Academy

Interested in learning new ways of making a difference and building skills through civic and community engagement? Attend the Iowa Civic Action Academy Nov. 9–10 on Drake’s campus, a regional conference offering skill-building in civic action, philanthropy, nonprofit leadership, dialogue, advocacy, and more. You’ll have the chance to network and learn what peers are doing on other campuses. Keynote speakers include owner of RAYGUN, Mike Draper, and founder of Pursuit of Innovation 515, Nancy Mwirotsi. Implementing Community Engaged Learning 101
Friday, Oct. 19, 1–2 p.m., Aliber 110
This workshop is for those new/inexperienced with community engaged learning, service-learning, and other forms of community-based pedagogy. This session will highlight the value and benefits of Community Engaged Learning (CEL), overview what CEL looks like here at Drake, share models and course examples, and explore the concept of the Civic Minded Graduate.

Tips, Tricks, and Tools for Facilitating Reflection in the Classroom
Friday, Oct. 26, 2:30–4 p.m., Aliber 112
Many know that reflection is important, but struggle to know how to structure reflection. If this sounds familiar, then this is the workshop for you! Participants will engage in hands on activities and reflection strategies that can be used to guide student learning. TOPICS covered include: introductions & icebreakers, ground rules (communication guidelines, establishing a friendly environment, learning agreement), importance of reflection, and specific reflection ideas.

Women’s Basketball to host annual One-on-One event

The Drake Women’s Basketball team hosts their annual One-on-One event on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the Knapp Center. Enjoy a dessert reception starting at 6 p.m. and then meet this year’s team. A special ring ceremony recognizing the 2017–18 season will follow the program. The event is free and open to the public.

School of Accounting ranks 14th in nation for CPA pass rate

Weeks after being named one of the Midwest’s best universities according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2019 Best Colleges rankings, Drake University is pleased to announce recognition on another distinctive list.

According to results reported by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy, Drake, a fully accredited AACSB business school, ranked 14th out of nearly 800 institutions in the nation for its pass rate on the 2017 Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. The University’s accounting graduates, taking the CPA exam for the first time, recorded an average pass rate of nearly 80 percent, well above the national average of approximately 53 percent.

Drake University to welcome Home2 Suites hotel to neighborhood

Visitors to Drake University and the Drake neighborhood will have exciting new hotel and restaurant options soon. Nelson Construction & Development has submitted documents to the city of Des Moines’ Urban Design Review Board regarding the hotel they plan to build across the street from Drake’s iconic OId Main building on University Avenue. The hotel will carry the flag of Home2 Suites by Hilton. This dynamic project, representing the start of the University Avenue redevelopment initiative, will also feature a restaurant and retail stores. Ground is scheduled to be broken in March 2019 with construction complete in May 2020.

CHINA Town Hall provides Americans the opportunity to participate in a national conversation about issues in the U.S.-China relationship, via an interactive webcast and in-person discussion with leading experts. Join the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations for a conversation on China featuring the Honorable Condoleezza Rice, Former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor.

The webcast will feature Secretary Condoleezza Rice, currently the Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy at the Standford Graduate School of Business, Thomas and Barbara Stephenson Senior Fellow on Public Policy at the Hoover Institution, and professor of Political Science at Stanford University.  She is also a founding partner of RiceHadleyGates, LLC.  From January 2005 to 2009, Secretary Rice served as the 66th Secretary of State of the United States, the second woman and the first African American woman to hold the post.  She also served as President George W. Bush’s Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (National Security Advisor) from January 2001 to 2005, the first woman to hold the position.

The webcast will be followed by an in-person discussion with Wenfang Tang, the University of Iowa’s Stanley Hua Hsia Professor of Political Science and International Studies. His current research focuses on public opinion and political change in contemporary China, as well as comparative political behavior. He has authored and coauthored several books and many articles in academic journals.
