Annual Benefits and Wellness Fair Friday
Please plan to stop by the Annual Benefits and Wellness Fair this Friday, Nov. 9, from 8:30–11:30 a.m. in Olmsted Center, Parent’s Hall North. This annual, come-and-go event provides an opportunity to learn about the wide range of benefits and wellness opportunities available at Drake University. Representatives from Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Advantage Administrators, Delta Dental of Iowa, TIAA, Long Term Care Strategies, Principal Life Insurance Company, Employee and Family Resources, and Human Resources will be present to answer individual questions. Dave G Spoken Word Poetry
Dave G is a Philadelphia-based spoken word poet, performer, and entertainer. His poetry is the tumultuous product of baptist preaching, hip-hop culture, and tireless introspection. He uses stages and poetry to spread messages of social justice, political consciousness, and self-love.
Before Dave G, there will be a group of student openers sharing their own poetry and perspectives.
All Mars coffee orders will be FREE for students during the show.

SJMC seniors are finalists for PR News student, intern of year
Drake seniors Katrina Sletten and Ellen Converse have been named finalists for the national PR News People Awards. Sletten is a finalist for PR Student of the Year and Converse is nominated for Intern of the Year.
The winners will be named at the annual PR People Awards Luncheon on Dec. 4 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The event celebrates the top professionals in public relations. This makes three years in a row an SJMC public relations student has been named a finalist in each category.
Sletten is finishing her work as a triple public relations, astronomy and physics major. She spent the summer in the Brooke Owens Fellowship program as an intern with the Museum of Flight in Seattle in the Digital Learning Department.
Converse, a PR and history major, had a summer internship in D.C. as education outreach coordinator at the Newseum. She has also had internships at AARP and the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer in Grand Island, Neb.

Drake Magazine, Urban Plains win national honors
Drake Magazine has received the top award in college journalism, winning a national Pacemaker honor at the recent Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Association convention in Louisville, Ky.
Urban Plains, the multimedia website produced by Drake School of Journalism and Mass Communication seniors, also won Associated Collegiate Press awards:
- Second place, multimedia feature: Urban Plains, Katherine Bauer, Genna Clemen and Jess Lynk
- Fifth place, multimedia sports: Urban Plains, Matthew Gogerty and Adam Rogan
In the College Media Association competition, Drake won four Pinnacle awards:
- Best Magazine Contents Page/Spread: First Place, Drake Magazine
- Best Online Main Page: Second Place, Urban Plains
- Best Portrait: Second Place, Urban Plains
- Best Arts and Entertainment Story: Third Place, Urban Plains

Join us Nov. 12 at 3:30 p.m. for a Town Hall meeting on International Education week, followed immediately by the Provost’s Drake Social. It will be a time to learn more about Drake’s international programs and meet some of our international partners who will be in attendance.
To get ready for the Dec. 13 social, consider nominating a colleague who is a model for Generosity of Spirit. Send the name and a sentence or two describing why this colleague exemplifies this Drake Core Value to Drinda Williams at drinda.williams@drake.edu. Carol Spaulding-Kruse recognized as finalist for engaged faculty award
Carol Spaulding-Kruse, professor of English, was recognized as a finalist for Campus Compact’s 2018 Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award. The award is bestowed annually to recognize one faculty member and up to four finalists nationally for exemplary leadership in advancing student civic learning, conducting community-based research, fostering reciprocal partnerships, building institutional commitments to engagement, and enhancing higher education’s contributions to the public good. Congratulations to Professor Spaulding-Kruse and two of the programs highlighted in her application, the Drake Community Press and Writing Internship program.

Veterans receive free meal at Hubbell Dining
Veterans Day is a federal holiday held every November 11th to honor all military personnel who have served in the U.S. armed forces. This year, Veterans Day falls on a Sunday, with most states observing it the following day (Monday).
Drake University would like to thank all of our employees who are veterans of our armed forces. In honor of service to country, we will offer our veterans a free meal at Hubbell Dining Services.
To receive a printed voucher for a complimentary free meal, which may be used at any time during the month of November, please bring evidence of military service such as a U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card, a current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), or your Veterans Organization Card. Alternatively, provide a photograph of yourself in your military uniform to Human Resources, located at 3206 University Avenue, anytime during the month of November. Thank you for your service.
