Repairing the Relationship between Students and Nature

Drake University doctoral candidate in the School of Education Kean Roberts and Jerrid Kruse, associate professor of education, recently published an article exploring ideas and strategies educators might use to help students develop more robust ideas about nature and strengthen their relationship with nature. Many of the ideas were pilot tested by Roberts in his work with middle and high school students as well as during Kruse’s honors course that engaged students in experiences and philosophical dialogue about nature. Lisa Ling to deliver 40th Bucksbaum lecture at Drake University

Acclaimed journalist Lisa Ling will deliver the 40th installment of the Martin Bucksbaum Distinguished Lecture Series at Drake University. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, in the Knapp Center, 2525 Forest Ave. A book signing will immediately follow the event. The lecture is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

Currently executive producer and host of CNN’s This is Life, Ling journeys to the far corners of America, dedicated to uncovering important issues. She previously served as executive producer and host of Oprah Winfrey Network’s Our America, field correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show, and contributor to ABC News’ Nightline and National Geographic’s Explorer. Ling got her start in journalism as a correspondent for Channel One News. She then went on to co-host ABC’s The View, which won its first Emmy during her tenure.

“Lisa Ling will be an important addition to the distinguished group of speakers who have been a part of the Bucksbaum Lecture series,” said Kathleen Richardson, dean of Drake’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. “Her career successes and dedication to uncovering injustice in the world are an inspiration to future journalists everywhere. We are thrilled to welcome Lisa to campus during the centennial year of journalism education at Drake.”

Ling has reported from around the world, covering everything from Afghanistan’s civil war to the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda. She often investigates crises in the United States as well, including the scourge of prescription pill addiction in Utah, the recent influx of women in North Dakota’s boomtown energy economy, and a town in the rural Midwest where young men aspire to be priests.

Ling was a member of President Obama’s Commission on White House Fellowships and a co-founder of Secret Society of Women. She also co-authored several books, including Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride: Rituals of Womanhood and Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and The Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home.

Key requests: Utilize the online form

As a step toward process improvement, and to assist you in a speedy delivery of your requested keys, the Student Services Center is planning to discontinue the use of the paper key forms starting Jan. 28. Submitting your key requests through the online Team Dynamix work order system is the preferred method of key requesting.

As has been done in the past, key requests will continue to be done by a designated building key approver. Key approvers can use the links below to request keys. If you are unsure of who is a key approver for your building/department, please contact Steven Blaylock at steven.blaylock@drake.edu.

Keys will be available for pickup at the Student Services Center (located in Lower Hubbell Hall through the spring semester). Keyholders are alerted via email when their key is ready, and Team Dynamix work orders are closed once keys are picked up by their owners. Please feel free to reach out to studentservices@drake.edu or steven.blaylock@drake.edu with questions about this process.

January phishing education

ITS will be continuing phishing education this month using emails that mimic real attacks. As a reminder, here are some indications that an email may be dangerous:
• A strange sender, or one that you don’t expect
• A request that you take ‘urgent’ or ‘immediate’ action
• Links or attachments that don’t match the message content or that you don’t recognize.

Slow down and take a second look before acting. If you receive an email that you suspect is phishing, don’t click any links, download any attachments, or reply. Instead, forward the email as an attachment to informationsecurity@drake.edu.

A short training lesson is assigned to faculty and staff members who repeatedly click links or open attachments in phishing emails, simulated or not.

For more information on how to report phishing emails, see the IT Service Portal guide, Reporting a Phishing Message (How-to).

Office supply ordering from Office Depot/Max

Drake University has exclusively contracted with Office Depot/Max for the purchase of all office supplies. They provide next day desktop delivery, unless an item is on backorder. This is the same contract that the Iowa Regent Universities are using so we have discounted pricing due to our consortium volume.

Please refrain from using Amazon, Walmart, Target, Staples etc. for office supplies. As one of the largest office supply companies in the U.S., they can typically find the item you need at the lowest price.

If you find that an item is higher with Office Depot, you can contact Bryan Bellis at bryan.bellis@officedepot.com and he will work with you to find an equivalent item or obtain bulk pricing if needed. If you need to shop in an actual store, there is a card you can print out from the purchasing website to take with you to use with your Drake P-Card so you will receive the same discounting.
