50 Years from Loving to Today: The Role of Lawyers in Tackling Racial Injustice

50 years ago, the Supreme Court invalidated laws prohibiting interracial marriage in Loving v. Virginia. Today at 4:30 p.m., hear about legal issues in Loving and current civil rights issues and legislation. At 5 p.m. the acclaimed 2011 documentary The Loving Story will be shown with a discussion to follow. The event will take place in Cartwright Hall, Room 213. Food will be served. Don’t miss ‘Celebrating Sound’ this Sunday

This Sunday at 3 p.m. in Sheslow Auditorium, the Drake Choir, Chamber Choir, and Chorale will present “Celebrating Sound,” a concert featuring music by contemporary composers from Lithuania, Estonia, Canada, England, and the United States, as well as a coronation anthem by Handel, with chamber orchestra. The concert will feature more than 100 students from all colleges and schools of the University. There is no admission charge to attend.

One-on-one with women’s basketball Oct. 12

The Drake women’s basketball annual One-on-One event will be Oct. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at The Knapp Center. Meet this year’s team and coaching staff as they head into the new season. Lorentzen Student Hatchery teams to pitch their ideas

The Lorentzen Student Hatchery teams will be pitching their businesses to the Des Moines entrepreneurial community at 1 Million Cups this month. Meeting every Wednesday at the Science Center of Iowa, 1 Million Cups is a free program, designed to educate, engage, and connect entrepreneurs, mentors, and advisors. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to come to the Science Center for networking, free coffee, and to support Drake students.

CBPA 101 Speaker Series: Risk Management

Drake’s College of Business and Public Administration presents the 101 Speaker Series. The upcoming session on Tuesday, Oct. 17, will focus on risk management. The program begins at 12 p.m. in Aliber Hall, Room 101. Drinks and dessert will be provided. Attendees are welcome to bring their lunch.

Life after Drake lecture to feature alum Jon Vermedahl

The Science Colloquium Series,” Life after Drake,” will feature a lecture by alumnus Jon Vermedahl, AS’02, this Thursday, Oct. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Harvey Ingham Hall, Room 135. Using the now retired Space Shuttle and the flight of STS-93 as a case study, his presentation will discuss the role a flight controller has in preparing for a space flight and in making a successful space flight from liftoff through landing.  Furthermore, the presentation will provide an overview of the various training methods used to prepare astronauts and flight controllers for upcoming space flights.
