Auditions for select choirs and Drake University/Community Chorus

Drake’s four choruses are open to all Drake students–regardless of major or year in school–and provide rehearsal and performance experiences for singers at a variety of levels of skill and experience.  More than 250 singers participate in these musical ensembles and cherish opportunities for engaging rehearsals, meaningful performances, and transformational tours.

Auditions for Drake’s three select choirs (Drake Choir, Chamber Choir, Chorale) will take place from Thursday, Aug. 23, through Sunday, Aug. 26.  Detailed information is available at drake.edu/music/.  The audition sign-up schedule, musical excerpts, and information will be posted on the bulletin board outside Harmon Fine Arts Center, Room 240, on Aug. 21.  Contact Aimee Beckmann-Collier, director of choral studies, at aimee.beckmann-collier@drake.edu for further information.

Students wishing to participate in the Drake’s non-auditioned ensemble, the Drake University/Community Chorus, can do so by coming to the first rehearsal on Tuesday, Aug. 28, from 6:30-8 p.m. in Sheslow Auditorium.  Please purchase the music (Dona nobis pacem, a moving choral/orchestral work using the poetry of Walt Whitman in a plea for peace) in the University Book Store and bring it and a pencil to the first rehearsal.

Community Engaged Learning faculty development opportunities

This fall the Office of Community Engaged Learning, in partnership with the Associate Provost Faculty Success, are offering three faculty development opportunities for faculty interested in community engagement and service-learning.

CEL Basics Learning Community: Whether you new to service-learning or an experienced practitioner, this learning community will discuss best practices in community engaged learning and explore how it may enhance student learning in the classroom. Led by Dr. Anisa Fornoff, the group will meet five times throughout the fall semester, for 90 minutes each meeting, to discuss the book “Service-Learning Essentials: Questions, Answers, and Lessons Learned” by Barbara Jacoby and apply the knowledge learned in this book to effectively connect classroom learning and community engagement. Compensation: $250. Limited to eight participants.

Engaged Faculty Institute: This two-day institute, brought to us by Iowa Campus Compact, will focus on incorporating community engagement activities into courses in ways that align with course learning goals, enhance student growth and civic awareness, and strengthen our community. This institute is structured for instructors who are interested in designing a service-learning project with their community partner.  Compensation: $250 for both the instructor and community partner. Limited to 10 instructor/partner pairs.

The Global Service-Learning Travel Seminar: Led by Carlyn Crowe, this nine month professional development opportunity is for faculty and staff who are interested in integrating service-learning or community engaged learning practices in a course that addresses issues of global relevance, whether that be abroad or in our local community. Compensation includes $750 stipend and round trip travel seminar to Guadalajara, Mexico. Faculty and staff from all disciplines are encouraged to apply but must have an interest in developing or enhancing at least one of the following:

  • A travel seminar or alternative spring break that includes service-learning.

Parking considerations during football season

The following parking considerations and restrictions will be in place on the dates listed below.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Scott Law at scott.law@drake.edu.

Friday, Aug. 31: Drake will be hosting the West Des Moines Dowling vs. West Des Moines Valley football game at 7 p.m. at Drake Stadium—one of the largest high school football games in the Des Moines area. Please expect increased traffic and vehicles on and around campus. There are no lot closings or restrictions in place for the game.

Saturday, Sept. 1: Drake Football vs. William Jewell at 6 p.m. The Studio Arts lot (STAH – 18S) will be closed starting at 2 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1. In addition, tailgating will occur in the Stadium lot (18N), so we strongly encourage students, faculty, and staff to park in other lots for the day. Please note that the same restrictions will be in place on the following dates for home football games, Sept. 1, Sept. 15, Oct. 6, Oct. 13, Nov. 3, and Nov. 10.
