“The Innovation Ecosystem”

Drake Law School’s Intellectual Property Law Center will host the first-ever Big IDEA Speaker Series this fall to bring intellectual property law experts to campus.

The first lecture is “The Innovation Ecosystem” featuring Dan Cosgrove of Pioneer on Sept. 29, 4:30-5:30 p.m., in the Patty and Fred Turner Jazz Center. During the lecture, Cosgrove will speak about the ecosystem needed for innovation, how technology will be impacted by innovation, and where lawyers fit in the process.

Cosgrove is vice president of business development for the DuPont Agriculture Biotechnology Group at Pioneer. He leads the strategic approach in research business development by establishing alliances with technology providers and out-licensing technology. Cosgrove joined Pioneer in 2001 as leader of the Intellectual Property Group and corporate counsel. He previously practiced in the area of litigation and licensing at Zarley, McKee, Thomte, Voorhees & Sease in Des Moines.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Want in to intern in Washington, D.C.?

If you’re interested in spending a semester in Washington, D.C., for an internship, check out The Washington Center (TWC) for Internships and Academic Seminars. On Thursday, Sept. 29, Brian Bar, a representative with The Washington Center, will hold a campus-wide information session at 3:30 p.m. in Meredith Hall, Room 238.

The Washington Center offers students an opportunity to live and work in Washington for either a semester-long internship program (students work 30 hours per week, supplemented with policy seminars, professional skills training, and academic coursework) or shorter academic seminars (offered in January and May on specific policy questions or for special events). Internship and coursework options span a large number of fields of study and TWC programs are appropriate for any student. Their course offerings include everything from “From Ideas to Action:  The Anatomy of Entrepreneurship” to “Bioethics” to “Forensic Psychology” to “The Mass Media and National Politics:  Explaining Washington to the Public” to “Philosophy of Law, the Supreme Court and the U.S. Constitutional Tradition” to “The National Mall and America: Symbols and Memory.”

If you are unable to attend the information session, but would like to find out more or meet with the TWC representative, please feel free to contact Professor Rachel Paine Caufield (rachel.caufield@drake.edu).

NEW service anniversary & retiree award platform

As we announced in August, Drake is partnering with the company Royal Recognition, Inc. in celebration of our faculty and staff as they reach many milestones in their years of service to the University. With this new collaboration, we now have access to a platform that automates service anniversary and retiree gifts. This allows all employees celebrating their 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35+ year anniversaries, and retirees to choose their gift of choice from an expansive online catalog.

Employees receive an ecard on or about their service anniversary or retiree date with information on how to select their gift, which is then mailed to their home. Employees with 20, 25, 30, 35+ year anniversaries and retirees will still be recognized at our annual anniversary and retiree event in the spring.

This new online platform has taken the place of the current award system and is effective with all service anniversaries and retirements on or after Sept. 5, 2016. So far the response from employees has been positive. An employee who recently celebrated a service anniversary said “The service anniversary gifts look great, and I was impressed with the wide selection of items.”

We look forward to what the future has in store for our organization and all of our dedicated employees. For more information, contact Human Resources at drakehr@drake.edu.

Annual Open Enrollment Period

As the Annual Open Enrollment Period for employee benefits approaches, the University Benefits Committee (UBC) is working diligently to review the Drake health and dental plans. Chaired by Matt Dore, the Richard M. and Anita Calkins Distinguished Professor of Law, the committee reviews plan information and compares Drake offerings to those of other employers and universities in an effort to ensure Drake plans are both responsive and competitive. Minutes from the UBC are posted on the Employee Tab in blueView. During the open enrollment period, the committee and Human Resources will sponsor town hall style discussions of the Drake plans.
