Healthy 4U BINGO

This is your last chance to sign up for Healthy4U BINGO— a great way to have fun and win prizes, all in the name of better well-being! The goal is to fill up a blank BINGO card (or two) with healthy activities you complete from a list and then play a game of Healthy4U BINGO for prizes.

How does it work?

Participants will receive a packet which includes directions, a list of Healthy4U BINGO activities, and a blank BINGO card. During the month of June, simply complete various activities from the list and record them on the blank BINGO card. There’s a broad range of activities to choose from, and you can complete them from home or work so everyone can participate.

Then at noon on Thursday, June 29, in the Paul Morrison Room and/or Friday, June 30 in the Olmsted Center Conference Room 310/311, bring your completed BINGO card(s) and join us for a fun game of Healthy4U BINGO for prizes! You are welcome to participate one or both days! If interested in participating, send an email to Linda Feiden at linda.feiden@drake.edu with the subject line “BINGO.” Deadline to register is noon on Wednesday, May 31.

Do you have authority to sign for contracts?

The Drake University Contract Policy governs who has authority to sign contracts. The policy was changed a few years ago to authorize various individuals to sign contracts, based on contract value thresholds. This allows us to streamline the contracting process, create appropriate accountabilities for contracts, and enhance our ability to effectively negotiate favorable contract terms.

Who has authority?

  • Board of Trustees—All real estate purchases and sales, security interests and permanent easements over $100,000, all land leases, acceptance of gifts of real estate, construction or capital improvement, all long-term debt transactions, legal settlements in excess of $100,000, retention of audit services, and investment of consultants for endowment
  • Director Human Resources—Letters of Appointment
  • Provost—Letters of Appointment
  • Director-level leaders with responsibility for a standalone budget—Contracts worth $25,000 or less
  • President’s Council Level—Contracts worth $250,000 or less
  • President/ Chief Financial Officer—Contracts worth $250,001 or above

Only the above have authority to sign for contracts on behalf of Drake as set forth in the Board-approved policy.

Please visit the contracting website for all information relating to the contracting policy, checklist, templates, and contact information.

New paper towel dispenser update

In July 2016, Drake’s Facilities Planning and Management (FPM) transitioned to new management staff. Since then, FPM has been assessing all aspects of the campus in regards to our services and costs.

Currently Drake has approximately 700 proprietary paper towel dispensers around campus that require four D batteries each, which require annual replacement. Over the next couple years, Drake will be changing paper towel dispensers to a universal model, which is still a touch-free dispenser but will not require any batteries. These dispensers work by mechanically cutting and advancing a 10” sheet of paper when pulled by the user.

This change allows Drake to obtain pricing from multiple vendors, saving the University nearly 50 percent on the cost of paper, as well as the cost of batteries. On a sustainability standpoint, FPM will save the use and disposal of thousands of batteries a year and be able to choose a paper product based on quality and recycle content.

Over the winter break, FPM assisted a student-lead initiative LEAD Capstone project with installation of hand dryers in Crawford Residence Hall, removing the paper towel dispensers. This allowed Drake to become a more economically and environmentally sustainable campus. FPM is using this directive to continue with hand dryers in other first year residence halls and in Collier-Scripps Hall and Science Connector Building, both opening this summer/fall. Our intention is to continue installing hand dryers in high-traffic restrooms all over campus in the coming years.
