Executive Education Center celebrates completion of first Leading Others cohort

The program was created as a result of Drake asking local corporations how their relationship with Drake could be enhanced; the business community responded that they needed Drake’s help to accelerate leadership faster in their organizations. The experience is aimed at executives who are leaders of teams who want to learn the what and the how of leadership in a hands-on, experiential environment. Based upon 120 hours of instruction, executive coaching throughout the 18 months, and guidance in implementing a leader development and business plan back at their office, these leaders can expect to see a leadership shift from being “ready later” to being “ready now.”

The unique experience with Leading Others includes the following highlights:

  • Foundational business model: This model establishes a causal relationship between what a leader does and how he or she does it and team member engagement and business outcomes
  • Proprietary leadership success profile: Along with a subsequent assessment report, the profile—produced from multiple perspectives—establishes a leadership readiness baseline and measures leadership readiness gains throughout the program.
  • Leader Development Plan and a Business Plan: Based upon the participant’s leadership success profile and business planning process, the participant will create both a leader’s development plan and a business plan.
  • Executive delivery team: Participants are instructed and coached by deeply experienced facilitators and executive coaches and national and global panel members for maximum return on investment.

The Executive Education Center is running two cohorts per year and is currently recruiting for its fourth cohort. Applications for the program are due Jan. 27, 2017. Please contact Sarah Ramsey, director of the Executive Education Center, for more information at sarah.ramsey@drake.edu.

Drake receives service grant

Drake will raise awareness of food insecurity in Des Moines during a free community event in honor of Martin Luther King Day 2017.

Drake was one of six Iowa colleges and universities to receive a MLK Day of Service Community Partnership Project grant from Iowa Campus Compact (IACC) this year. The grants—in Drake’s case, more than $1,600—provide funding for service projects that work toward alleviating hunger and supporting veterans.

Drake’s event, organized by students in Drake’s Sprout Garden and Next Course: Food Recovery Project, will provide a free meal for about 50 people. Each attendee will receive potting containers, soil, and a variety of seed packets and fresh plants that they can take home to start an in-kitchen garden. The event will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26. Renner gives invited seminar in the United Kingdom
Michael Renner, professor of biology and psychology, gave an invited seminar at Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom as part of the institution’s Primate Conservation Seminar Series. His seminar, “A multiple-fronts approach to restoring a rain forest remnant: Tales from Gishwati National Park, Rwanda,” presented his work to make the Gishwati Forest Reserve in Rwanda sustainable. He has worked with the Great Ape Trust and a Rwandan NGO, Forest of Hope Association, to protect the national park, which was nearly destroyed by deforestation in the post-genocide era of Rwanda. Projects, many of which have involved Drake students and professors—most notably Keith Summerville—have included:

  • Testing methods of reforestation to provide food sources for the native wildlife
  • The development of plans to create a wildlife corridor between Gishwati and Mukura, another forest remnant a few miles away
  • Developing methods to prevent and mitigate crop-raiding, in which wildlife from the forest—primarily chimpanzees—come out onto adjacent agricultural lands for food. Crop-raiding causes great resentment of the reserve among local populations
  • Several community development projects, including supporting the development of a beekeeping industry, craft cooperatives, creating community libraries, creating opportunities for local folks to share their indigenous cultural practices with visitors, and others.
