Drake International Office photo contest

Are you a Drake student who has studied abroad or are currently abroad in an amazing city? How about an international student loving their time here at Drake, or even a faculty member who has led the most awesome travel seminar? This is for you!

Drake International is hosting a photo contest for International Education Week 2018! View photo contest guidelines.

From Tuesday, Oct. 30, through Monday, Nov. 12, we will be accepting photo submissions in four different categories:

Capture the Culture: share the images that you think best represent the local culture and/or highlight your cultural experience while studying abroad or in the U.S.

Global Learning: share the academic highlights of your international experience.

The Great Outdoors: these pictures can include outdoor scenes, nature images, landscapes AND cityscapes that you have witnessed during your domestic and international travels.

Most Epic Selfie: show us your most epic selfie!

*You can earn an extra 5 votes per photo for showing off your Drake gear in any of these photos.

Photo submissions are to be sent via email to studyabroad@drake.edu.

You can see all contest submissions and vote for your favorites on our Facebook page.

Your votes will help us select 20 finalists whose photos will be displayed for in-person voting during the International Education Week events on campus. Category winners along with an overall winner will be announced on Nov. 12.

Bulldog Swim Challenge and Bulldog Bootcamp

The Bulldog Swim Challenge begins Nov. 5 and ends Nov. 30. Challenge yourself and your friends to sign up and record your swim mileage for the month of November. The top swimmer of the month will receive a prize. Email drakeaquatics@drake.edu to register.

Bulldog Bootcamp sign-up is now open for students. Bootcamp will be Tuesday and Thursday evenings from Jan. 29 to March 7. Email wellness@drake.edu to register.

Fall Sussman Leadership Conference presents: Leading Across the Divide

The Fall 2018 Sussman Leadership Conference presents: Leading Across the Divide with featured keynote speaker Dr. Rachel Paine Caufield, professor of political science. The conference will take place Sunday, Nov. 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Olmsted Center.Space is limited. Register by Nov. 1.

How do you respect and work with others whose viewpoints you find disrespectful, uninformed, or hurtful to you and those you love? What can we do to ensure all perspectives are welcomed and shared as student leaders on campus? How do we move forward after sharing divisive opinions to lead, make decisions, and take action in the best interests of all in a community? The Fall 2018 Sussman conference theme, “Leading Across the Divide,” will address these themes and more, with a specific emphasis on helping students build the leadership skill of seeking to understand and communicate across diverse perspectives in a way that builds positive, collaborative, and sustainable change. Registration is free for all Drake students, and includes brunch, a keynote speaker, and three breakout sessions to build your leadership skills.

Join NASA Chief Historian for free lunch this Thursday

Drake students, join us on Thursday, Nov. 1, for an exclusive lunch with NASA Chief Historian Dr. Bill Barry. Dr. Barry joined NASA in 2001 and became the organization’s chief historian in September 2010. Before joining NASA, he spent 22 years in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot and member of the faculty of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

He will be at Drake to deliver The Harkin Institute’s fall Sussman Lecture. His visit comes as NASA celebrates its 60th anniversary and Americans across the U.S. flock to theaters to see the new movie, “First Man”, about Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.

The Harkin Institute’s student luncheons offer intimate, hour-long opportunities for Drake University students to visit with an accomplished government, nonprofit, journalism, political, or public policy leader. During this event, Dr. Barry will informally discuss his career, share information, answer questions, provide advice and get to know students. Read more and apply to attend.

Psychology and Neuroscience Research Panel

Join Psi Chi, Drake’s psychology honor society, as we hold a panel with representatives of the psychology and neuroscience department research labs on Monday, Oct. 30, from 4:30–5:30 p.m. in Olin, Room 101.

The panel is designed to bring awareness to the different types of research laboratories in the psychology and neuroscience department in order for students to have the opportunity to become involved in research, learn more about their respective faculty members, and gain overall research insight.

We will discuss current projects from each lab and talk about opportunities for student research assistants.

Each faculty member will speak about the different kinds of research occurring in his or her laboratory and there will be time at the end for an open question format.

In addition, attendees will be provided with pamphlets outlining each faculty member’s research laboratory.

There’s still time to take the ITS student phishing quiz

Now through Nov. 2, ITS is holding our Student Phishing Quiz, a contest where Drake students can learn about how to identify phishing emails and fraudulent websites and learn how to keep their information safe online. The first 500 people to take the quiz will win a certificate for a free taco courtesy of Taco John’s. Everyone who completes the quiz will be entered to win one of ten additional prize packages.

Olmsted Halloween Spooktacular

This Halloween, SAB and RHA are hosting our first ever Spooktacular! From 7–9 p.m., all of Olmsted will be filled with frights. Study sustainable development in Sub-Saharan Africa next summer

If you want to know more about how you can experience a life-changing adventure while studying sustainable development in Uganda, join Professor Glenn McKnight on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 9 p.m. in Meredith, Room 235, or Dr. Deb Bishop on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 5 p.m. in Aliber, Room 102.

This six-unit summer 2019 travel seminar is open to students of all majors, and students can choose their area of focus as it relates to sustainable development. Students have the unique opportunity to experience Uganda alongside local university students from Makerere University Business School, and will learn about many topics with hands-on experiences including: human rights, education, microfinance, health care, tourism, entrepreneurship, rural agriculture, etc. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with in-country partners on research or service-learning projects of their choosing.
