Contagious illness protocols

On May 11, 2023, the federal government ended the COVID-19 national public health emergency. Drake has adjusted its COVID-19 guidance to reflect the expiration of the PHE and integrated COVID-19 into the University’s Contagious Illness Protocols

These protocols are applicable to any instance in which a student is contagious with a viral or bacterial infection, such as influenza, strep, mononucleosis, or COVID-19.  Although reporting is no longer required, infectious students cannot attend in-person classes and must contact their instructors to coordinate making up any missed material. If a student is unable to communicate with instructors for any reason, they must contact the Dean of Students Office at dos@drake.edu.

Please visit our Contagious Illness Protocols website to review this information.  For additional questions, contact dos@drake.edu

Updates to Drake’s COVID-19 guidance upon conclusion of the national public health emergency

May 11, 2023, marked the end of the federal COVID-19 national public health emergency. Drake has adjusted its COVID-19 guidance to reflect the expiration of the PHE as indicated below.

  • Masking: Masks are not required on Drake’s campus. Individuals who choose to wear a mask based on their own circumstances are encouraged and supported to do so. Changes in this positioning will be predicated on community transmission levels.
  • Test Availability: PCR tests will no longer be available to Drake from the state of Iowa Department of Public Health as a state testing site. Students will be able to obtain tests at the Student Health Center.
  • Reporting Positive COVID-19 Tests: Faculty, staff, and students with a positive test will no longer be required to report test results to the University. Everyone, however, should refer to the CDC for guidance after a positive test and consult with their provider for appropriate care.
  • Relocation Procedures for Residential Students: As of the conclusion of the Spring 2023 semester, the University has discontinued relocation procedures of on-campus students who test positive for COVID-19. This means an isolation room in Ross Hall will no longer be offered as a temporary housing option. Prior to move-in this fall, residential students will be provided additional information about what to do should they test positive for COVID-19.

As always, the University will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation carefully and adjust these measures as needed. Although the official public health emergency has ended, please remain vigilant about protecting yourself and others.

For questions on Drake’s COVID-19 guidance, contact Scott Law at scott.law@drake.edu.

Residence hall donation drive

Done with residence life but not wanting to throw away or drive home everything you purchased?  Give your stuff a new home to someone in need!

The Office of Sustainability has partnered with Residence Life and the Free Store to divert waste from the landfill and provide people in need with furniture free of charge.  A Free Store truck will be parked outside GK from the morning of May 11th to 5 p.m. May 12th.  Please place anything you would like to donate in the truck.

We are looking for microwaves, vacuum cleaners, coffee makers, toasters, dishes, tableware, floor and desk lamps, coffee tables, flat screen TVs, sheets, quilts, blankets, comforters, and towels.  Please ensure any blanket, towel, etc. is CLEAN! We are NOT collecting refrigerators.

The Free Store started in 2001 to provide victims of domestic violence with furniture free of cost. They have since expanded to helping anyone in need.

There will also be Global Engagement collection piles by the front desk of each hall, or you can take items to their office in Cowles 127.  They are accepting Electric Kettles, Keurig’s, and gently used winter gear (coats, scares, hats, and gloves).

For any questions contact the Sustainability Coordinator, Hannah Remke, at hannah.remke@drake.edu.
