Training session tomorrow on new career management software

This summer, Professional and Career Development Services  upgraded our career management software by replacing Career bluePrint and moving to Handshake. This new technology provides significant improvements to online recruiting, events management, and communication services functions. We are excited about this upgrade and all the new features and services it will make possible for our students, alumni, employers, and the broader Drake community.

Training Session
All interested faculty and staff are invited to attend a training session tomorrow, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m. in Sussman Theater, Olmsted Center. Additional training sessions within the colleges will be offered throughout the fall.

Accessing the System
Interested faculty and staff are welcome to create a student account on Handshake. For more information, or if you have questions, contact your Professional and Career Development Services liaison at drake.edu/career/contact.

Why Handshake?
We chose Handshake because of the wealth of features and functionality it offers to our users. For example, Handshake provides:

  • A customizable, personalized experience similar to that of LinkedIn or Facebook
  • An intuitive design that’s easy to learn and use
  • A set of fast and powerful search tools for both job seekers and recruiters
  • The ability to have access to jobs on a local, regional, and national scale
  • Better access to internships and other career development opportunities
  • An iOS ready mobile app

Learning Symposium kicks off faculty and staff academic year

Faculty and staff who attended the Drake Learning Symposium were introduced to an array of strategies to help navigate difficult conversations in both the classroom and in the workplace. Keynote speaker Dr. Kathy Obear was a dynamic and knowledgeable facilitator, addressing an audience of over 120 Drake employees.

Feedback from the event included a request by many for additional training and ways to carry the information into departments across campus. Those who attended received a packet of information with website links for free access to Dr. Obear’s books, resources to accompany the books, and webinars. Any of these might be used for additional small group work. Please contact Drinda Williams if you need these links.

In addition, the classroom and workplace scenarios generated by those in attendance have been recorded, and may be used for small group discussion or problem solving. Please contact Drinda Williams if you would like these scenarios.

The Learning Symposium was followed by this year’s first Drake Social in the Cline atrium. President Marty Martin welcomed new and returning faculty and staff, and shared some ways employees will be engaging with the Drake Values throughout the year.

See the Learning Symposium web page for more information.

In Memoriam: Clive Elliott

Clive Elliott – theatre artist, beloved educator, and friend – passed away on Sept. 1, 2018, at Fountain West Health Care Center in West Des Moines. He was 82.

Clive began an association with the Theatre Department at Drake in 1982 when he started as a visiting director and performer. He officially joined the Drake faculty full-time in 1990 as the Daniel B. Goldberg Artist in Residence. He remained for nearly 23 years, teaching, directing, and occasionally performing in productions before retiring in 2012. Clive touched the lives of countless students at Drake; his performance of the Lewis Carrol poem “Jabberwocky” (from Alice in Wonderland) was a perennial favorite at the orientation assembly for new students. Clive also shared his talents with the community by directing Shakespeare plays, performing character roles in ballet productions, and adjudicating student performances for the Iowa High School Speech Association’s annual competitions.

Clive had a passion for classical music, art, and poetry. His guilty pleasures were coffee, kids movies, and anything chocolate. He was a voracious reader and he had a wonderful gift for storytelling. Clive didn’t keep scrapbooks. He never wrote a memoir of his remarkable life, although many of his friends urged him to do so. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his students, whether they followed his footsteps into professional theatre or found success elsewhere. They are his true legacy.

Those who wish may donate in Clive’s memory to the Drake University Theatre Department or Hospice of Central Iowa. A celebration of his life will be held later this fall – date and location to be determined. Read Clive’s full obituary.

Video: Our Core Values

Watch a short video to learn about our core values. Our core values form the foundation for how we, as faculty and staff, perform our work, conduct ourselves, and interact with each other. These values guide our interactions as colleagues in support of delivering on our mission promise. Through these values we continue to build a stronger, more vibrant campus culture.

This video builds on President Martin’s message sent to faculty and staff on Aug. 27:

Welcome to the 2018–2019 academic year, with a special welcome to those faculty and staff new to Drake this fall. We are excited to have you join our Bulldog community. Drake is a place known for its resilient education, life-defining experiences, and most importantly, its people. I could not be more proud to be part of this community.

This year we will focus on, among other things, putting our Core Values into action. As a reminder and for those new to Drake, last year we went through an exercise to revise the Drake University Core Values. While many of us had an intuitive understanding of those values, it was important for us to identify and define the qualities and behaviors most important to our culture and in keeping with our Statement of Principles. Our four new Core Values are: Joyful Accountability, Generosity of Spirit, All in this Together, and Commitment to Mission.

As we set off together on this new academic year, it is my hope that we commit ourselves to these Core Values and use them to guide how we work together as colleagues, teammates, and collaborators in delivering on our mission promise. Living these values will support our development and engagement through a shared sense of purpose and identity. When fully embraced, they will foster a culture of collaboration, inclusiveness, and respect, and will help each of us recognize and reward each other’s commitment and contributions.

This week, each department, college, and school will receive posters and table tents that describe the Core Values. I encourage you to display these in your common areas and offices as a reminder of how you drive and strengthen our culture. This year, our Core Values will also be reflected in hiring and performance review processes, recognition events, and more.

Drake University is a unifying force for all of us who work, live, and study here, as well as our global network of alumni and supporters. As the new school year begins, may we be united by our values and our pride in being part of this extraordinary community.

I look forward to a great year. Go Bulldogs!
