Hear from distinguished business and community leaders

Today’s business climate is dynamic, tumultuous, and fiercely competitive. To be successful, business professionals must possess many important skills, leadership attributes, innovative thinking, and strong business acumen. BizTalk@Drake is about leading people and organizations at a time of change, uncertainty, and even disruption; it is about exposure to opportunities, business trends, leadership philosophies, and management paradigms. This College of Business and Public Administration seminar series features prominent and distinguished chief executive level (C-level) business and community leaders who will share their experiences (both successes and failures) and their perspectives on timely topics related to business trends, strategic challenges, and leadership in an interactive setting.

Nominations Open for Global Practitioners

The Principal Center for Global Citizenship invites nominations for the Global Scholars/Practitioners-in-Residence program, which seeks to attract talented individuals from academia or the professions who have outstanding international expertise to teach a course, mentor students, give public lectures, work on joint research with faculty, and aid the development of the institution as a whole through fruitful external collaborations.

Nomination Instructions:

Candidates should be nominated by the academic unit to which they will be attached. Please submit the following supporting materials: 
• A nomination letter discussing the qualifications of the candidate and expected contributions to the life of the University
• Candidate’s biographical information
• A letter of interest from the candidate
• A letter of support from the unit dean

Nominations should be directed to Annique Kiel, executive director of Global Engagement and International Programs, by March 1. Units considering a nomination are encouraged to consult with PCGC Acting Director Jeff Kappen. 

Among the criteria to be considered are:
1. A record of recognized international leadership and distinguished professional accomplishment in any field.
2. A documented commitment to international understanding and global citizenship.
3. An ability to bring unique perspectives and experiences to the Drake community. 
4. A willingness and ability to offer courses that complement the existing curriculum and meet rigorous academic standards.

In recognition of their contributions, Global Scholars/Practitioners receive a stipend, a travel allowance, an appropriate workspace, and access to all University facilities. Global Scholars/Practitioners will be affiliated with an appropriate academic unit for at least one semester and offer at least one course per term.

Engaged Campus Award nominations due March 4

Awards will be presented at the Iowa Campus Compact Engaged Campus Awards and Summit Monday, April 29, at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. Mandi McReynolds, Director of Community Relations and the Foundation at Principal, will be the keynote speaker.

Bulldog Bites: Lunch and learn session will discuss equity and inclusion

Through a collaboration between the Public Safety, Title IX and Violence Prevention, and Equity and Inclusion departments, Human Resources is excited to offer a new series of programming focused on safety and inclusion called Bulldog Bites. The program will make our own campus experts accessible to faculty and staff to talk about how we can all make our community feel safe and inclusive. The next session is Wednesday, Feb. 13, at noon in Cowles Library, Room 201.

Mark your calendar for the brown-bag lunch series, which includes five sessions throughout the year.  Remaining sessions are:

Feb. 13: Equity and Inclusion part 2
March 13: Title IX/Prevention part 2

Those who attend will enter a drawing for Hubbell Dining Hall and annual parking passes.

J-Term grades due tomorrow

Faculty, if you taught a J-Term class, please submit your final grades by 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Those of you who want to submit grades directly into MyDUSIS should begin by clicking the Grading button in the Faculty & Advising menu in MyDrake and then finding the Final Grades—Submittal Link.

Participants needed for study on lower extremity injuries

Associate Professor of Athletic Training, Nathan Newman, EdD, ATC, is conducting a study on the impact of low-level laser therapy on lower extremity injuries. Low-level laser therapy is an experimental treatment that may decrease pain and inflammation in common musculoskeletal injuries. Faculty and staff members that have recently suffered a lower extremity injury, or suffer one in the near future, please contact Professor Newman at nathan.newman@drake.edu about participating in the study. Compensation will be provided to participants who complete the entire study.

All in This Together nominations due Feb. 8

Faculty and staff who exemplify All in This Together, our third Drake Core Value, will be recognized at the Provost’s Social on Feb. 13 from 4–6 p.m. in Shivers Hospitality Suite. Please come to enjoy this social time with colleagues and to recognize those who exemplify collaboration and teamwork. Beer, wine, and soft drinks will be served, along with popcorn and snack mix.

If you’d like to submit a colleague’s name for recognition, email drinda.williams@drake.edu, by Friday, Feb. 8. In the email, include the name of the person you are nominating and a sentence or two telling how your colleague exemplifies All in This Together. All those nominated will be included in a scrolling presentation, and three winners will be drawn at random to select from a menu of prizes.

Drake Basketball Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night

All Drake University faculty and staff are eligible to receive up to four complimentary general admission tickets to the Women’s Basketball game versus Missouri State on Friday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. in the Knapp Center. Tickets may be picked up at the Knapp Center Ticket Office Monday–Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. or at the ticket window on game day. Must show valid Drake Card at time of pick up.

Faculty opportunity for community engaged scholarship and teaching

The Office of Community Engaged Learning and Service will support up to six faculty who want to attend the Midwest Campus Compact conference. Support covers conference registration ($300), transportation (van carpool from Des Moines) and two-night stay at University of Minnesota residence hall (or you may book a room at the conference hotel using your own funds, cost is $160/night).

Whether you are new to community-engaged learning and scholarship and curious about learning the basics of community-campus partnerships, or you are a seasoned engaged scholar who is seeking innovative approaches and discussion of important issues, this conference will provide you with the opportunity to learn, explore, connect, leave prepared for bold and thoughtful action. 

Faculty interested in this opportunity should contact Renee Sedlacek, director of Community Engaged Learning, by March 1 at renee.sedlacek@drake.edu.
