The Principal Center for Global Citizenship invites nominations for the Global Scholar/Practitioner-in-Residence program for Spring 2024, seeking to attract talented individuals from academia or the professions who have outstanding international expertise to teach a course, mentor students, give public lectures, work on joint research with faculty, and aid the global capacity-building of the institution through fruitful external collaborations. Two scholars will be selected.

Nomination Instructions

Candidates should be nominated by the academic unit to which they will be attached. Please submit the following supporting materials:

• A nomination letter discussing the qualifications of the candidate and expected contributions to the department and University as a whole
• Candidate’s biographical information
• A letter of interest from the candidate
• A letter of support from the department chair and college/school dean, including how the scholar advances departmental and college/school strategic goals related to internationalization

Nominations should be directed to Annique Kiel, executive director of Global Engagement and International Programs, by May 24, 2023. Preference will be given to practitioners or scholars from one of Drake’s global partners. Units considering a nomination are encouraged to consult with Annique prior to submission.

Among the criteria to be considered for the nominee:

1. A record of recognized international leadership and distinguished professional accomplishment in their field
2. A documented commitment to international understanding and global citizenship
3. An ability to bring unique perspectives and experiences to the Drake community
4. A willingness and ability to offer courses that complement the existing curriculum and meet rigorous academic standards.

In recognition of their contributions, Global Scholars/Practitioners receive a stipend, a travel allowance, an appropriate workspace in the host college/school, and access to university facilities. Global Scholars/Practitioners will be affiliated with an appropriate academic unit for the semester and will offer at least one course.

Drake is excited and honored to be an Institute Partner for the 2023 Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Beginning in mid-June, Drake will host twenty-five of Africa’s bright, emerging business leaders for a six-week program on our campus. One of the highlights for Fellows during the Institute are the Home-Hosted Meals and 1-on-1 time with Focus Project Coaches to develop action plans to identify and address a need in their business, organization, or community.

Mark your calendars for a retirement reception to honor and celebrate Lee Jolliffe, professor of journalism and mass communication, on Wednesday, May 10, from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. in Collier-Scripps Hall, Room 308.

With the University’s fiscal year-end (June 30, 2023) approaching, below are recommended guidelines for efficient and effective year-end processing of financial transactions.

Accounting for departmental expenses:

In accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, Drake is required to report transactions in the proper fiscal period. For that reason, expenses are recorded in the period when goods are received and/or services are rendered. In short, items expensed to the FY23 budget will need to be received before the ‘end of the business day’ on June 30, 2023.  Factors such as budget allocation, invoice receipt, or payment issuance would not have an impact on the application of expenses within a fiscal period.

Exceptions to this general rule apply when a benefit of service or receipt of item extends into multiple fiscal years. In such cases, the following guidelines will be applied.

• Expenses less than $5,000: will be charged against the fiscal year in which the majority of the expense will be incurred. (For example, if a subscription is purchased for $3,000 and covers the period of 7/1/22 through 12/31/23, the expense would be charged to FY23 because 12 months are in FY23 and only 6 months are in FY24)
• Expenses greater than or equal to $5,000: will be split into the fiscal years according to the percentage of benefit received during each fiscal period. (For example, if a subscription is purchased for $10,000 and covers a period of 7/1/22 to 6/30/24, $5,000 would be charged to FY23 since 12 months are for FY23 and $5,000 charged to FY24 because the remaining 12 months is in the following fiscal year)

The University’s guidelines for year-end purchases are subject to external audit. As you make purchases during this period leading up to and overlapping our fiscal year-end, it is important to note when the goods or services were received so they are expensed according to reporting requirements. If the timing of receipt is not clearly noted on the invoice, it would be beneficial to help call the receipt date to the attention of accounting by clearly noting the appropriate fiscal year, based on the above guidelines, in the business description in Finance Self Service.
