“The Press, the Polls, and the Presidential Campaign 2016”

Public opinion researcher J. Ann Selzer and political expert David Yepsen will discuss the fallout of the 2016 presidential campaign in a wide-ranging discussion at Drake on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m.

“The Press, the Polls and the Presidential Campaign 2016: Where Do We Go From Here?” will begin at 7 p.m. in the Cowles Library Reading Room. The event is sponsored by the Drake School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Selzer runs the nationally recognized Iowa Poll, and Yepsen is retired director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University and former political reporter at The Des Moines Register. They will discuss media and polling coverage of the campaign, why the results of the election seemed to catch so many in the national polling and journalism establishments by surprise, and the effect on the profession’s credibility. There will be plenty of time for audience questions.

Scholarly Voices: From Writing to Speaking

Join us for an informal panel discussion co-sponsored by Jody Swilky, coordinator of writing instruction, and Joan McAlister, coordinator of public speaking instruction.

Surveys, focus groups, and informal interactions suggest that a significant number of students and junior faculty at Drake have a high degree of anxiety about presenting scholarship for a “live” audience (at capstones, conferences, and in other settings). Three Drake scholars with considerable experience presenting their scholarship to a range of audiences will discuss what influences them when they present written work publicly. The event is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2, from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Speaking Center on the lower level of Cowles Library.

The Media, The Constitution, and the 2016 Race

Join Iowa Public Television and The Harkin Institute in Sheslow Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m., when we welcome a panel of former politicians, media experts, and an academic to weigh in on the 2016 presidential race and outcome.

Panelists will include:

  • Kay Henderson, Radio Iowa news director
  • Kathie Obradovich, Des Moines Register political columnnist
  • Dennis Goldford, Drake professor of political science
  • Jim Leach, Former Rep. (R-Iowa), 1977–2007
  • Dave Nagle, Former Rep. (D-Iowa), 1987–1993
  • Dean Borg, Iowa Press moderator and host

Dennis Goldford, The Harkin Institute’s Flansburg Fellow, will open with remarks about modern media’s impact on America as the “extended republic” described in the U.S. Constitution. His riveting discussion will examine the way TV, talk radio, and the internet appeal to consumers’ emotions while usually focusing on only one point of view, thus guiding us away from the reasoned deliberation intended by our Constitution’s authors.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to watch from the audience as IPTV records Iowa Press, with moderation by Dean Borg and introduction by Joseph Jones, executive director of the Harkin Institute
