Humanities Colloquium Series

The Drake Humanities Center will hold three colloquia this semester, each by a faculty member who published a book in the past year, thanks in part to aid from the Humanities Center.

On Friday, Feb. 24, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Jeff Karnicky, associate professor of English, will discuss his book Scarlet Experiment: Humans and Birds in America.

On Friday, March 31, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Megan Brown, associate professor of English, will discuss her book American Autobiography after 9/11.

On Friday, April 21, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Michael Haedicke, associate professor of sociology, will discuss his recent work.

All events will take place in Levitt Hall. Cheese, crackers, beer, wine, and other beverages will be available. Contact Jeff Karnicky for more information.

Jordan Concert Series

Drake is proud to present Robert Chen, concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as the next artist in the Jordan Concert Series. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 3, in Sheslow Auditorium and is free and open to the public. Chen will be accompanied by pianist Stephen Prutsman. The Black Panthers and Liberation

Please join the Coalition of Black Students for the culminating event of Black History Month on Friday, Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m. in Sussman Theater. Human rights activist and attorney Kathleen Neal Cleaver will deliver a lecture for the Drake and Des Moines community on the topic of the Black Panthers and Liberation, followed by a question-and-answer session. All are welcome at this event, which is free and open to the public.

Kathleen Neal Cleaver, who currently holds an appointment as a senior lecturer and research fellow at Emory University School of Law, has spent her life participating in the human rights struggle. She started alongside her parents in the 1950s civil rights protests in Alabama. By 1966, Kathleen Neal dropped out of Barnard College in New York to join the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) where she served in its Campus Program based in Atlanta. She then moved to the San Francisco Bay area, and from 1967 to 1971, she was the first communications secretary of the Black Panther Party.

The annual Black on Black Banquet, sponsored by the Coalition of Black Students to celebrate its achievements and honor this year’s guest speaker, will follow the lecture and will begin at 7 p.m. in Parents Hall. This event is free but ticketed due to seating capacity. For information on banquet tickets, please contact cbs@drake.edu.

Drake Writer’s Night

Writers are invited to come share their work and/or listen to what classmates, colleagues, and community members are working on. The Drake Writer’s Night, part of the Susan Glaspell Writers & Critics Series, will take place on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. in Medbury Honors Lounge.

Provost Mattison to give lecture on cancer treatments

Provost Sue Mattison will discuss disparities in treatment and survival among cancer patients during a free public lecture as part of the Drake University Science Collaborative Institute (DUSCI)’s Science Colloquium Lecture Series. “The Grand Scheme of an Unwholesome Condition: The Epidemiology of Cancer” is scheduled for noon on Friday, Feb. 17, Harvey Ingham Hall, Room 134. Anderson Gallery Lecture Series—John Fender: The Material Aspect

What: Anderson Gallery Lecture Series
When: Wednesday, Feb. 15, 6–7 p.m.
Where: Anderson Gallery, Fine Arts Center

John Fender, associate professor of graphic design, will discuss the 2013 Anderson Gallery exhibit “The Material Aspect: 50 Years of Popular Music Packaging,” that he curated. John will share images of the installation, discuss the historical and aesthetic basis of the exhibition, and play select tracks from some of his favorite albums.
