Concert featuring all four Drake choirs

The Cavalcade of Choirs concert will feature all four of Drake’s choral ensembles: The Drake Choir, Chamber Choir, Drake/Community Chorus, all conducted by Aimee Beckmann-Collier, as well as the Drake Chorale, conducted by Linda Vanderpool. The performance will feature more than 250 singers and a huge variety of music, ranging from a Renaissance motet to a composition written by William Dougherty, Drake professor of music. There is no admission charge.

Annual Baby Bowl Dec. 3

Drake Women’s Basketball will host the fourth annual Baby Bowl on Sunday, Dec. 3, during halftime of its game against Creighton. Children 18 months and younger are eligible to compete. This is a crawling-only competition. We invite you to register your baby or encourage friends and family to do so. Be sure to sign up early as space is limited. Registration is open now until all slots are filled. Racers will receive two complimentary tickets to the game for parents/guardians. All contestants will receive a Drake Bulldogs baby bib for their efforts. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers.

Gallery exhibition: Mies/Weese at Drake

Curated by Professor Maura Lyons and curatorial students, “Mies/Weese at Drake: Where We Live and Work” will investigate buildings designed for Drake’s campus by the acclaimed architectural firms of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Harry Weese Associates in the 1960s and 1970s. The gallery exhibition will open Nov. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Anderson Gallery with gallery talk by the curators starting at 6 p.m.

Several programs that are free and open to the public will take place in conjunction to the exhibition:

  • Panel discussion on current building projects at private colleges and universities in Iowa, with representatives from Drake, Cornell College, Grand View University, and Grinnell College; Nov. 11, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.,Turner Jazz Center
  • Lecture on Harry Weese and Associates by Robert Bruegmann, professor emeritus, University of Illinois at Chicago; Nov. 16, 7 p.m., Harmon Fine Arts Center, Room 336
  • Lecture on Mies van der Rohe by Dirk Lohan, principal, Wight & Company, and grandson of Mies van der Rohe; Dec. 7, 7 p.m., Meredith Hall, Room 106

Drake alumnus and neurosurgeon to share expertise

Dr. Holsapple, chief of neurosurgery at Boston University Medical Center, will present his lecture about the brain, neurosurgery, medicine, and consciousness on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. in Sussman Theater. Dr. Holsapple is a Drake alumnus. Attendees will learn about neurosurgery and hear a neurosurgeon’s perspective on medicine. The lecture is open to the public and sponsored by Phi Delta Epsilon. “States and the Making of Constitutional Law”

Join the Drake Law Federalist Society Nov. 3 in welcoming The Honorable Jeffrey S. Sutton from the United States 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. He will discuss the role state constitutions play in the making of constitutional law. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, in Cartwright Hall, Room 213. Poet Ashlee Haze to perform at Mars

Ashlee Haze is a two-time Women of the World Poetry Slam finalist and Southeast Regional Slam Champion. You may have seen her poems on Youtube, For Harriet, in the Huffington Post, and in many other media platforms where her poetry has been described as funny, heart wrenching, and most importantly, unapologetic. She will be performing at Mars Cafe at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3. Free coffee will be provided. The event is sponsored by the Student Activities Board.
