Faculty and Staff Blackboard online courses

President Marty Martin recently provided information about online courses to be completed by Drake faculty and staff. The courses are now available online in Blackboard and participants have been enrolled as students. The Drake University Online Information Security Awareness and Prevent Sexual Violence Together courses are to be completed by Dec. 7, 2018. The Prevent Discrimination and Harassment Together course is to be completed by March 31, 2019.

This new program underscores Drake’s commitment to the safety and security of our people. You’ll view realistic scenarios based in a higher education setting and interactively answer related questions.
Training is completed at your own pace and the courses may be accessed multiple times. Courses retain previously completed content and will return you to the place you last viewed course information. The Blackboard system will electronically record your status as “completed” when you finish each course.

Cowles Library needs faculty feedback

On Thursday, Oct. 25, all Drake faculty received an invitation from Provost Mattison to participate in Drake University’s version of the Ithaka Faculty Survey, an important study of the impact of digital technologies on research, teaching, and publishing. Survey responses will help to direct the initiatives of Cowles Library’s continuous improvement plan and inform campus planning and decision-making with respect to research and teaching resources.

The survey seeks faculty perspective on a range of topics, including how faculty engage with and perceive the library. In particular, this survey will help the library gain insight into how our faculty members teach and conduct research in a rapidly changing and increasingly digital environment.

We know you are very busy and probably suffering from survey fatigue, but please consider giving the library 20–25 minutes of your time to take this survey. You do not need to complete the survey in one sitting. Any progress is automatically saved, and you can pick up where you left off. You will need to refer to Provost Mattison’s October 25th email message for the survey link. Learn more on Cowles Library blog.

Become involved in Phi Beta Kappa at Drake

Drake is among a small group of colleges and universities that offer a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the national honors society for arts and sciences. The society works to champion education, foster freedom of thought, and recognize academic excellence. Are you interested in helping Phi Beta Kappa at Drake thrive? Were you inducted to Phi Beta Kappa at your undergraduate institution? If you answered yes to either of these questions, please email your contact details and direct any questions to Maura Lyons at maura.lyons@drake.edu. We are looking for members to take part in the important task of reviewing eligible student candidates in the spring and be part of efforts to increase the chapter’s visibility and activities on campus.

Meet My Religious Neighbor open house

Please join us for our next Meet My Religious Neighbor open house on Sunday, Nov. 4, which is to be hosted by the Des Moines Zen Center at 6901 SW 14th Street in Des Moines. From 1—3 p.m., the Zen Center will hold an open house during which guests can tour their new facility, meet members of their community, and learn how they practice Zen Buddhism there. At 3 p.m., there will be a guest lecture by David Loy, a celebrated professor, writer, and Zen teacher in the Sanbo Zen tradition of Japanese Zen Buddhism.

Meet My Religious Neighbor is a monthly open-house series. Each open house allows the public the opportunity to tour a sacred space, learn how religion is practiced in it, and meet the congregation who worships there.
