2018 Wellness screenings: Early bird prize

Those on Drake’s health plan can save approximately $300 in 2019 by completing a wellness screening this year. If you are on Drake’s health plan and currently enrolled in the Wellness Premium Incentive Program, you must complete a wellness screening annually to retain your savings. New this year: You will not be required to complete an online wellness assessment. You only need to complete the wellness screening to receive the premium incentive.

There are three ways to complete your wellness screening:

  1. At a participating Hy-Vee (available through Sept. 15).
  2. With your physician and fill out a Physician Wellness Screening Results form (available through Sept. 30).
  3. On campus through UnityPoint Health (online registration opens Sept. 4 with screening dates in October).

There are a set number of spaces available for the on campus screenings so we recommend as many employees as possible consider the physician or Hy-Vee option.

As an incentive, HR is offering an early bird prize. If you complete your screening through your physician or at a participating Hy-Vee by Sept. 30, your name will be placed in a drawing for a chance to win your choice of a prize from an online wellness catalog. That said, you are welcome to use any of the three options that work best for you.

Join Weight Watchers at Work fall program

Drake’s current weekly Weight Watchers at Work series ends Aug. 28, and the program is looking for faculty and staff who may be interested in a new series later this fall.

Meetings are held Tuesdays and include confidential weigh-ins from 12 to 12:15 p.m., followed by a 30-minute class.

Weight Watchers’ unique mix of face-to-face interaction with a trained leader, group support, accountability, digital tools, and the convenience of meetings in the workplace has been a winning combination for many Drake faculty and staff.

The cost is $156 for a 12-week renewable series with a minimum of 15 participants, or $186 for a 17-week series with a minimum of 20 participants. Payment must be made in a lump sum, or it can be split into three payments.

Did U Know: University Archives

This past year, Drake held a series of Did U Know classes that highlighted University departments and campus services.  Based on positive feedback, HR is bringing it back with new topics.

This year’s series is kicking off with Did U Know: University Archives on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. in Cowles Library, Room 201.

In University Archives you can find everything from the Ding Darling Collection and Tom Harkin Papers to unique items such as half a gold medal mounted on a plaque to commemorate the first gold medal won by a Drake athlete in an individual event at the Drake Relays.

The presenters, Claudia Frazer, archives director; Hope Bibens, University and political papers archivist; and Katherine Lincoln, archives associate, will cover what they do, what they have, and what they collect during this one-hour presentation. In addition, they will share some of their most interesting artifacts.

Participants will earn Bulldogs United in Learning Drake (BUILD) credits and be entered into a drawing at the end of the semester.

To register, email Linda Feiden at linda.feiden@drake.edu. Additional BUILD information, including an online registration form, will be available soon in myDrake. Click on the human resources app at the top of the page and the BUILD information can be found in the Learning & Development section.

Fall semester faculty writing group

Drake faculty members are invited to participate in a faculty writing group meeting approximately once a month over the fall semester. The first meeting will be on Friday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Meredith Hall, Room 229. The group will be co-facilitated by En Li (History) and Nate Holdren (LPS). Our goals will be to help ourselves make progress on our scholarship during the semester, and do so more efficiently and enjoyably. In our meetings, we will discuss our goals, plans, and progress on our writing, share how we organize our writing time, and discuss challenges in our writing. Depending on participant interest we will workshop each other’s work and write on site. We will also read a book on academic writing such as Joli Jensen’s Write No Matter What or Robert Boice’s Professor as Writers and discuss it to the degree that participants find it useful.

There are spots for ten faculty participants. Should more than 10 individuals express interest, priority shall be given to 1) Those who participated in the spring semester or May/August faculty writing groups, 2) Tenure-track faculty who are not yet tenured, and 3) Faculty who are members of under-represented groups.

This writing group is supported by a Faculty Development Grant from the Provost’s Office. Faculty who attend all of the sessions will receive a small stipend of approximately $150. People who can only attend some of the sessions are encouraged to participate if doing so helps their writing.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Kayla Jenkins at kayla.jenkins@drake.edu by Friday, Aug. 31.

If you have questions, please contact En Li at en.li@drake.edu and/or Nate Holdren at nate.holdren@drake.edu.

In Memoriam: Don Marcoullier

Don Marcoullier, former professor emeritus of wind and brass instruments and director of bands at Drake, passed away on Aug. 5. Don was director of bands from 1956 through 1987, and under his leadership, the band program achieved national prominence. Don always considered the real success of the program to be the achievements of “his kids”—the university students he served and followed throughout their careers. To this day, his former students still refer to him as “Chief.”

Under his direction, the Concert Band performed for national conferences of preeminent music education organizations, and premiered major compositions by six nationally renowned composers. He was a guest conductor, clinician, and lecturer in 38 states, Ireland, Canada, and Mexico. The Drake University Marching Band performed at 18 National Football League games and was named, “One of the nation’s top five marching bands” by CBS.

Don authored the book, “Marching for Marching Bands,” introducing the unit system of marching which was widely adopted by marching bands across the U.S. For 50 years he served on the executive committee of the Drake Relays, and was elected to its Hall of Fame. Don was a Board Member of the American Bandmasters Association, and Past President of College Band Directors National Association, Iowa Bandmasters Association, Iowa Music Educators Association, and Des Moines Civic Music Association.

If you’d like to pay tribute to Don by generously contributing to the Don R. Marcouiller Endowment for Band Excellence, please contact Doug Lampe at doug.lampe@drake.edu or 515-271-3055. Please see his obituary online. Don will be deeply missed by many family, friends, and colleagues.
