The BIG Dream Gathering comes to Drake

The BIG Dream Gathering is coming to Drake on Sept. 6, 6:30–8 p.m., in the Olmsted Center, Parents Hall. The BIG Dream Gathering (BDG) is a fun and inspiring event that helps individuals become clear on their dreams and goals—and gives them the boost they need to make them a reality. It starts with a hilarious and powerful keynote address by the BDG’s co-founder, Mitch Matthews. Then you’ll have the unique experience of getting to dream big together in a safe, fun, and powerful way. The first people to arrive will also receive a FREE copy of Mitch’s best-selling book, IGNITE! Registration is walk-in only, 6:15–6:30 p.m., the evening of the event. This engaging networking event is open to faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the general public. Please plan to attend and encourage friends, family, and students to attend as well.

Frequently asked questions about the BIG Dream Gathering on campuses:

How does it work?
First, you are given a dreamer number so you can post your dreams and goals anonymously. Then Mitch kicks it off with a 40-minute talk about the fun and inspirational story behind the BIG Dream Gathering. Plus, he shares some powerful principles that will help you to get clear on your dreams and achieve them. Then everyone gets to post their dreams and encourage other dreamers. Afterward, you will get your dream sheets back so you can go after those dreams and achieve them.

What can happen?
For a lot of people, the BIG Dream Gathering is the first time they have really thought of their big dreams and goals. Plus, it’s an incredibly powerful experience to write those dreams down and be able to post them anonymously. It’s like you’re getting to draw a line in the sand and take a stand for your dreams. Then the connections start to happen. These gatherings have helped people to find dream internships and jobs, launch businesses, run marathons, start nonprofits, make movies, write books, and drive monster trucks (yeah… we said monster trucks), and the list goes on and on!

What are some of the craziest stories?
You just never know what is going to happen when you get a group of people together for the express purpose of thinking about their big dreams and helping each other to achieve them. We’ve had everything from a college senior get help connecting with her dream job at Pixar, to a student with a passion for photography score a mentor who was a Pulitzer-Prize–winning photographer. We’ve had a junior with an idea for a nonprofit get the funding he needed to get things started, all the way to a senior who wanted to learn how to sail competitively be given a sail boat by a successful alumnus! Again, it’s always amazing to see what happens when people come together to dream big!

What do people learn?

  • The power and importance of dreaming big
  • Strategies for clarifying and achieving those dreams
  • Powerful and applicable networking skills

Where should I park?
Parking will be available to the public in Lot 1 (East of the Fine Arts Center). A shuttle will run 5:30–6:30 p.m. and 8–9 p.m.

Engaged Citizen Experience meeting
Each spring semester, Drake sponsors our Engaged Citizen Experience. This is a series of cocurricular events designed to bring Drake students, staff, and faculty together with the Greater Des Moines community to discuss important political and social issues. This spring semester theme will be: Demographic Opportunities and Challenges: Domestic and International. It was selected because of student interest as reflected in a survey done of returning students last April, and because it is directly related to many issues with local, national, and international implications including immigration, refugee, and Black Lives Matter. If you are interested in helping us plan Engaged Citizen Experience events, including our annual Engaged Citizen Conference and documentary film series, we will be having our first meeting on Friday, Sept. 9 at 9 a.m. in Old Main 208. For additional information contact me at arthur.sanders@drake.edu.

FYS lunch/discussion
The first Friday FYS lunch/discussion is on Sept. 9 at noon in the Medbury Honors Lounge. While these meetings are designed for those currently teaching FYS, we welcome those with an interest in possibly teaching FYS in the future as well. If you would like to attend please go to: http://tinyurl.com/septfyslunch and let us know your lunch preferences.

NEW service anniversary & retiree award platform

We are excited to partner with the company Royal Recognition, Inc., in celebration of our faculty and staff as they reach many milestones in their years of service to Drake. With this new collaboration, we have access to a platform that will automate service anniversary and retiree gifts. This will allow all employees celebrating their 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35+ year anniversaries and retirees to choose their gift of choice from an expansive online catalog. Employees will receive their gift on or about their service anniversary or retiree date and still be recognized at our annual anniversary and retiree event in the spring.

This new online platform takes the place of the current award system and is effective with all service anniversaries and retirements on or after Sept. 1, 2016. Watch for more information in upcoming OnCampus communications.

We look forward to what the future has in store for our organization and all of our dedicated employees. For more information, contact Human Resources at drakehr@drake.edu.

Join Weight Watchers at Work this fall

Summer is coming to a close and the fall term is beginning. Now is the perfect time to get into the habit of making healthier choices. If your goals include losing weight, Weight Watchers at Work may be the solution.

The cost is $156 for a 12-week renewable series with a minimum of 15 participants. Payment may be made in a lump sum or split into three payments.

Weekly meetings include a confidential weigh-in prior to the meeting, followed by a 30-minute class. Weight Watchers’ unique mix of face-to-face interaction with a trained leader, group support, accountability, digital tools, and the convenience of meetings in the workplace have helped participants be more successful than those who try to lose weight on their own.

If you are interested in joining Weight Watchers at Work, please contact Linda Feiden at linda.feiden@drake.edu. If we have enough interest, we will set up an informational meeting in the near future.
